According to a tire size calculator the diameter is actually pretty close to our full size tires (but our stock spare size is smaller)

Stock full diameter: 24.7 inches
Stock spare diameter: 23.9 inches
Z3 spare diameter: 24.9 inches

Yes, the outside diameter of a 125/90-15 is 23.9", this is an inch less than a normal 318ti wheel. So technically, if you're going to "harm the differential" it would be when you run the 15" spare.

125/90-16's overall diameter is 24.9".

Stock 318ti sizes

205/60-15 overall diameter 24.7"
225/50-16 overall diameter 24.9"

Yes, I said he would need to get a new wheel, I even provided the part number. It is $35-$50 depending where you get it from.

I don't know if it will fit perfectly in the tire carrier. Potentially you could modify the stock carrier. You'd have to make sure there was 0.5" clearance to the tightest spot on either side of the wheel. Or just stick it inside the car for longer trips with a wheel cover on it.

Good call pointing out the carrier dimensions Coyoteh.

Tirerack has a 125/80-16 kuhmo spare tire for $65. That overall diameter should be 23.9" which should fit nicely in the stock carrier.

Pick up that and the wheel itself (p/n 36116750006) from a BMW dealer and have a nice new spare.

Has anybody tried a full size tire in the spare tire compartment under if it fits? What needs to be done to make it fit?

Has anybody yet tried this recommendation from Spidertri?

I had to use my 17 year spare. Was the only option I had. Was cracked. I slapped it on and limped to a service station to inflate. Then drove at "reduced" highway speeds for about 40 miles.

car sat on spare a week (not driving) and I got all new tires and threw the spare in the hatch till I could find a new one. Had a run of warm weather and check out what happened! (pic's below) Glad I wasn't in the rig when that thing let go!

Anyhow I'm going to try this idea and see if it'll fit, wondering if anybody else has yet.

JB Weld should fix that right up.

Seriously, I also should check my spares...

The spare on my 95 ti didn't hold air anymore. Bead seal didn't fix it, most likely due to corrosion on the rim.

I found a spare on ebay purportedly from a 2000 Z3 that was sized the same (T125/90/R15) and looked like an exact match. It fit perfectly. Apparently some Z3's came with a R16 spare and others an R15. Hope that helps someone.
