First I would like to say that I have just dropped an email with Jim and I'm waiting for a reply. I am finishing the body work on my 1996 ti automatic the donor vehicle is a 1997 automatic m3. As I have stated both cars are automatic and my plan is to keep them this way. What extra parts am I going to need to perform this swap and is the EWS going to be a headache. The donor car is good shape (drive train and all the electronics) sorry that I can not say the same for the rest of this donor (a roll over victim) but back to issue at hand. Any input and time goes greatly appreciated. | | | 12-14-2004, 10:11 PM | #2 | Member Join Date: Oct 2004 Location: Central Jersey Posts: 74 | Quick response Well as I had finished emailing Jim he reply in no time. My manual is now on its way (thank you Jim) Any further input on this project is appreciated. I will post further status as time goes on. | | | 12-17-2004, 06:32 PM | #3 | Member Join Date: Oct 2004 Location: Central Jersey Posts: 74 | It has been two day since I emailed Jim and now the manual has arrived (great service thanks Jim). Very detailed and plenty of additional information, very happy with the product. Thank You. The project is going to start in January and I'll try to keep on posting as the project proceeds. | | | 12-18-2004, 10:47 PM | #4 | Senior Member Join Date: Jul 2004 Location: Tampa Posts: 465 | Ive done this swap 2 times already.... is pretty simple to a certain extend. I mean, if you are working with wal mart tools... it'll be hard. EWS there is a few ways of going around it. (swap complete system with key chip), have it synched by the dealer $299-$450 or have someone rent you a tool that will do all that. My best advise to you.... Don't try to cut any corners!. replace as much of the hosess and sensors as you can fr new ones (no matter if they are working as some sensors and hosess are hard to replace when the swap is done) Here are some pointers of stuff I ran into that I should of done before finishing the swap: Fresh clutch ALWAYS! no matter if it only has 30K, that's 30K more before you replace it again! (disk $120) and replace you motor mounts as well!! ($54 each!) do all the bolt ons when the engine is out! (flywheel, headders, bushings, thermostat and housing, electric fan, pulleys, shifter etc....) this will save you $ on labor later on! CHANGE YOUR MICROFILTERS!!! and install your gauges. If you are swapping to 6 cyl OBD1 gutt the cats out while the mid pipe is out, if you are swapping to OBD2 either buy the o2 sensor fakers and gutt the cats out(or cut the cats off and get a BOLTED REMOVABLE STRAIGH PIPE so you can bolt the cats back on for emissions), or get new cats and o2 sensors or run a pressure test on the old cats to make sure they are not almost clogged. your oem 318 sway bar won't work. your oem fuel pump won't work (PROPPERLY) your Cluster won't work (PROPPERLY) I have an M cluster for sale if anyone needs it you should change the radiator to a 6 cyl one the steering coil needs to be changed. your OEM cruise control cable is not long enough Your OEM ac lines are too short the cat back muffler part off an E36 must be shorten to fit the Ti, but you can use it. brackets and hangers must be cutomized when you swap the cluster the MPG gauge doesn't work propperly. writeups avail I don't have a book, but I have a lot of detailed pics of wiring, and all the problems I ran into and solutions. I can direct you to the link for them. | | | 12-18-2004, 11:42 PM | #5 | Senior Member Join Date: May 2004 Posts: 411 | Quote: Originally Posted by maurolin Ive done this swap 2 times already.... is pretty simple to a certain extend. Also you will need bigger discs and pads. I would recommend Brembo big brakes or Zimmerman. Sometimes getting up top speed is easy, but stopping is a trick. | | | 12-20-2004, 05:27 PM | #8 | Senior Member Join Date: Jul 2004 Location: Tampa Posts: 465 | I have not blown my stock diff yet..... although I hear new noises on the rear end.... the brakes are a MUST! just upgrade the spindles and calipers to the M3. one thing I found out..... bigger brakes, better brakes will put more stress on the control arm bushings!. you can loose control VERY easily if you don't change this!!! I am getting off setter bushings.. poly. this is big when braking.... | | | 01-04-2005, 04:52 AM | #9 | Senior Member Join Date: Dec 2004 Location: Colyumbia S.C. Posts: 101 | the EWS is pretty simple to bypass. Find the EWS control unit and jump the wires for the starter. they are the two larger wires. if you more info let me know. if bypassed it starts whenever you hit the key. Worked great to strart the V8. | | | 01-05-2005, 06:17 PM | #10 | Member Join Date: Oct 2004 Location: Central Jersey Posts: 74 | Thanx to all and I will keep the project posted. | | | 01-13-2005, 06:30 PM | #11 | Member Join Date: Nov 2004 Location: Tulsa,OK Posts: 51 | How easy it is to get an E36 M3 engine in the ti?? ~*Teg*~ | | | 01-14-2005, 03:45 PM | #12 | Member Join Date: Oct 2004 Location: Central Jersey Posts: 74 | The swap is somewhat easy and you can almost say bolt on. The swap is time consuming and you need to have mechanical knowledge. I will be posting some pics as the progress goes along. | | | | Currently Active Users Viewing This Thread: 1 (0 members and 1 guests) | | Posting Rules | You may not post new threads You may not post replies You may not post attachments You may not edit your posts HTML code is Off | | | |
