Default Business Radio - diversity reception - more

Mentioned before but never got a final solution !!!!

The BMW business radio (2000 Euro 316i) has two aerial connectors; one with a standard ISO connector and one having one of the very small SMB plugs - and marked Diversity.

Now the interesting thing is that when I opened up the Business Radio to see where the SMB wire went to - the socket in the radio seemed to go nowhere ! Didn't seem to be connected to anything.

Now I want to put an aftermarket Blaupunkt Bremen in the hole and that looks for a second aerial for true diversity reception. But I still don't know for certain if there is an aerial on the end of that SMB wire or if it just disappears into the loom and isn't connected to anything ?

One forum member has suggested an aerial embedded in the front windscreen - but I haven't got one of those - aerial that is !

I don't really want to take the car apart to find out where the SMB wire goes as it disappears into the loom - does anyone out there know (or have a scrap car out in the yard they can take apart for me !!!) - please ?

Thanks - Jim

Mallard - thanks for quick reply; the adaptor arrived on my desk this morning !

re the other end of the SMB cable which was the bit I couldn't work out - I have removed the rear lid (trunk lid) inner cover and found the aerial preamplifier in the lid. It appears to have two rf wires coming out of it. So hopefully the diversity cable is indeed connected all the way through - and I shall expect even better reception when I fit the lead tomorrow.

Thanks for helpful reply

The second aerial is the rear window defroster. If it doesn't work, neither does that antenna.

Talking Yes, both aerials work - diversity restored

Just checked the radio out with the adaptor lead suggested by Mallard.

No aerial in - just noise; either aerial in - works well on all channels

Both aerials in - works well and presumably I now have diversity reception !

Thanks for advice - always helpful to know someone has been there before.

The second aerial is in the tax disc holder on the front windscreen...not all ti's have it..if ur tax disc holder is substantial and has a small wire coming out of it u have it...its a paper holder or an aftermarket one u dont!! Bleeding works well if u do have it tho

No, mine's a humble 316i but with the 8 valve 1.9 engine - so no tax disc aerial.

Goes well enough for me as there is little opportunity to exceed 60mph round here; my ancient 1935 Austin Ten still feels quite at home and with a top speed of 50mph doesn't hold many up !

In the UK we tax our cars every year (I think in the US you buy new number plates ?) - and to prove we have paid we have a small round tax disc that usually fits into a holder that sticks onto the windscreen.

Blaupunkt make an after-market aerial that looks like a tax disc holder - and it seems that some euro Ti's have one - that's the reason for this bit of the thread.
