The best I've gotten was 33 on an all hwy road trip. In town I usually get 21-23. __________________ '96 318ti California Edition- Montreal blue '68 1600-2-Caribe blue | | | 10-20-2017, 03:54 PM | #62 | Junior Member Join Date: May 2017 Location: Croatia Posts: 26 | Oh yey this is exactly a thread i needed... Because i assume someone will appreciate what i have "achieved" So im driving my 1996. 318ti wich now has 322 thousand kms for more than a year and im measuring my fuel consumption from the first day. When i started driving it i was fueling up on some local gas station that had unimaginable ****ty fuel, what i realised it was the fuel unfortunately after two fill ups (too bad it was running on that **** for even a kilometer but i didnt know it was the fuel it was bad untill i fueled car somwhere else without even carying about that). Then i reallised that my car wasnt actually broken because it didnt want even to start every other time and i was getting fuel consumption of 11l/100kms aprox. Meanwhile i checked my emmisions, lambda, everything i could think of because i didnt know how could use so much fuel if its not spitting it since im driving it prety gently. And then i started driving on actual fuel and got some actual fuel consumption readings wich im really happy to share with you. First of all i drive my car prety gently (If you wonder why, its driving style i like). Since im not driving on highway i dont go faster than 80-85km/h (50mph). I have never done a full tank of city driving so i cant provide you with that information. Highest reading i got was combined kind of city driving in the winter when i calculated 8.5l/100 kms (33mpg - since most of you are probably using imperial units i will convert for you since im from europe) Usual combined driving in the winter i was getting 7.9-8.4l/100km (36-34mpg) Driving in the summer got me significantly lower fuel consumption and i got calculations of 7-7.6l/100km (40-37mpg) sometimes running AC pretty much all the time on combined driving conditions. Lately im driving 90-95km (in both directions) trip (60mi) and i was surprised when i saw how many kms im getting even before my fuel light came on. I have prety much open road (wich i do my favourite speed of 50mph on) and drive about 10kms of that trip in pure city driving (wich is not much more than 10% of that trip) In that 90sth kms trip i have two cold starts because engine cools down completly from sitting half a day. I averaged 5.6l/100km (50mpg). That was average on my first fuel tank when i started driving there and i will update when i calculate avg for second tank to verify that first calculation. Im prety happy with my fuel consumption but im also interested what numbers i could achieve with some significantly more economical cars like vw up 60 hp version for example. | | | 10-20-2017, 04:36 PM | #63 | Senior Member Join Date: Sep 2006 Location: Greeley CO Posts: 233 | Quote: Originally Posted by Ivan I averaged 5.6l/100km (50mpg). | 50mpg!!! I alredy mentioned that im really easy on throttle and that my top speed is 50 mph. (unlike almost every other driving style) Its just one thing i forgot to mention that probably has some effect (i dont know how much) on that average and that is that im running my tires at 0.5 bar above recomended spec. Hope i dont get attacked for that crime :P | | | 10-20-2017, 07:27 PM | #65 | Junior Member Join Date: May 2017 Location: Croatia Posts: 26 | Im quite dedicated to efficient driving... Here is one clip recorded on part of my route where im driving on open road. https://youtu.be/-v9WvRVGbqE You could call me slow but isnt it cool to have such average figures? | | | 05-05-2018, 01:02 AM | #66 | Member Join Date: Jan 2017 Location: Mississippi/ Tennessee Posts: 76 | I know this is an older thread... But with my 318ti MSport 5 spd, it’s around 33-35mpg hwy at 60-65mph and 21-24 mpg city depending on traffic etc. I’ve been as high as 38mpg. But with spirited driving it’s like 27-29 mpg on the highway...! | | | 05-05-2018, 01:33 AM | #67 | Senior Member Join Date: Sep 2006 Location: Greeley CO Posts: 233 | Averaging about 29-32 in mixed driving, 245,000 miles on the clock now. I'm thinking straight highway, probably 34-36. Just got back from a 2,000 mile trip in a manual Honda Civic; first tank was 40mpg, second tank 42mpg, third tank 47 mpg - I had to run the numbers twice, couldn't believe it. And that's on a car with 114,000 miles. | | | 05-06-2018, 03:25 PM | #68 | Senior Member Join Date: Jul 2009 Location: US Posts: 315 | 14-18 in city. 21-26 on highway. It spends most of the time at full throttle. And with 1200cc injectors I can empty a tank real quick | | | 08-02-2018, 11:42 PM | #70 | Senior Member Join Date: Sep 2006 Location: Greeley CO Posts: 233 | Just got back from a trip to the mountains; 36 mpg. and 125 or so of those miles were what I would call 75 to 80% highway. Not that far off the 39 mpg highway when new. | | | 08-07-2018, 03:59 AM | #71 | Member Join Date: Mar 2016 Location: NorCal, East Bay Posts: 32 | 29 MPG for me. I have a 95 318ti base with about 160,000 miles on it. I'm getting on average about 29 MPG with around 80% of my driving at commute times on the freeway (about 60 miles round trip). I've always used 15w40 delo oil with changes between 4,000 and 5,000 miles (previous owner did the same). Sure love driving this car! | | | 08-20-2018, 02:31 PM | #72 | Junior Member Join Date: Aug 2018 Location: Illinois Posts: 4 | I'm only getting 20 mpgs highway driving, which I know is pretty low. I just bought a temperature sensor which I believe should fix this issue, (the car is rough idling and the heat is not blowing warm) but I have no idea where it is located under the hood. Does anyone have any idea where the temperature sensor is located? I wanted to post this as a new thread, but I don't know how to create a post, I just signed up. Sometimes the gauge sensor, the fan sensor and the sensor that the ecm uses are separate, not sure about the ti. If you've got no heat, I'd be looking beyond the sensor; thermostat's the 1st place I'd look, especially if the temp gauge on the dash is reading low. I'm editing this - it was a bit early for me when first responded. The sensor on the radiator is a switch for the electric cooling fan. The coolant sensor that interfaces with the ecm is just above and to the rear of the oil filter, next to the lift bracket. But still, if you're not getting heat, I would start by checking the thermostat. Last edited by paul somlo; 08-20-2018 at 07:18 PM. I'd like it to be a bit more, but it's fine I suppose.
