Default Engine Shipping

Anyone ever shipped an engine? I'm just wondering if there is anything that I should know about before I do this. I'm going to ship my M42 and I have a 32x48inch oak pallet that I was going use. I am going to build up some cribbing on it and use some large lag screws to screw the engine to the cribbing (4x4's). Any suggestions, recommendations, experiences would be welcome and appreciated.

If you can get it sitting flat and steady I think some banding and a lot of shrink wrap would actually hold an M42. Also, if you have any plastic injection molders around the pellets arrive in large super heavy duty boxes.

I had a motorcycle shipped to me from NY for 400 bucks using www.uship.com. It basically works like ebay, except bidding is reversed so your shipment goes to the LOWEST bidder. You make a listing describing what you want to have shipped including the origin and destination, then freight/transporting companies bid on your shipment. You can set a limit on how much you're willing to spend and there's an option called "book it now" which works like "buy it now" on ebay. You can set a "book it now" price and if someone accepts your offer, you're obligated to use that company. It's been a few years since I used them, but the shipment/transaction went really smooth.

Thanks for the shipping info guys. Jess, I'm going to check that out that uship website when I get done crating up this engine. Here is a pic showing the engine sitting on a standard 48"x32" pallet from the Home Depot ($15). There is 2 4x4's under each of the motor mounts, this gives a good height since all of the weight of the engine isn't sitting on the oil pan. I'll post agiain when I make more progress. I'm probably just going to use some ratchet straps to hold it down to the pallet and screw the mounts to the 4x4's. I'm also going to brace the engine to the pallet from the back of the engine using some of the bellhousing bolt holes. I think shipping company may prefer to have this in a crate and not just laying on a pallet, but I'm not sure about that now...
