I'm replacing the engine with another M44 engine. Removing the 5speed transmission before the engine was pretty tough. I'm thinking of bolting the transmission to the new engine before installing. I know the shop manual says not to. How do you guy's do it. I think I saw a picture somewhere on this forum showing the front end removed from the car which would sure make it easier I think. Any suggestions would be nice. Thanks. | | | 03-27-2011, 06:27 PM | #2 | Senior Member Join Date: May 2006 Location: 43609 Posts: 3,425 | Leave the transmission installed to the engine. Ive put my complete drivetrain and header to midpipe on in one shot along with the front half of the driveshaft. Unbolt the steering rack and let it hang down to the front of the crossmember, then install the engine assembly then the rack to the steering ujoint. __________________ 1995 Hellrot Clubsport 318ti -Gone 1996 Schwartz II Sport 357ti - 5.7L V8 LS1/6 1997 Moregrun Metallic 318ti - Gone 1998 Schwartz II sport 318ti - M50TUB25/5 | | | 03-27-2011, 10:15 PM | #3 | Junior Member Join Date: Jan 2011 Location: Orlando Fl Posts: 24 | Ok, thanks. The steering rack is in front of the crossmember now. Not sure how dropping it down will help but you should know. Thanks again. | | | 03-27-2011, 10:38 PM | #4 | Senior Member Join Date: May 2006 Location: 43609 Posts: 3,425 | It will be out of the way so you can put the engine in and out. Trust me, ive done enough swaps to have it down to an hour and a half for swapping with no air tools. Remove the rubber engine mounts and leave them loose in their retaining holes, drop the rack down, and youll have access to removing and installing your engine fairly easily. __________________ 1995 Hellrot Clubsport 318ti -Gone 1996 Schwartz II Sport 357ti - 5.7L V8 LS1/6 1997 Moregrun Metallic 318ti - Gone 1998 Schwartz II sport 318ti - M50TUB25/5 | | | 03-27-2011, 10:41 PM | #5 | Senior Member Join Date: May 2006 Location: 43609 Posts: 3,425 | __________________ 1995 Hellrot Clubsport 318ti -Gone 1996 Schwartz II Sport 357ti - 5.7L V8 LS1/6 1997 Moregrun Metallic 318ti - Gone 1998 Schwartz II sport 318ti - M50TUB25/5 | | | 03-28-2011, 12:40 AM | #6 | Junior Member Join Date: Jan 2011 Location: Orlando Fl Posts: 24 | Ok, thanks again. I'll give it a try this week. Does the the front end just unbolt or are there welds I have to deal with? | | | 03-28-2011, 08:08 AM | #7 | Senior Member Join Date: Jan 2010 Location: Earth Posts: 178 | I had trouble unbolting the driveshaft/guibo so I dropped the whole thing on the floor (subframe/steering rack removed already). Unbolted the tranny from the engine, dragged that out from under the car, and then hoisted the motor out. Didn't feel the need to unbolt the front end this way.
