Huge storm hit Omaha today, right after I got off work. Winds over 90mph, heavy rain, golf ball size hail (for 5+ minutes). I was driving home and pulled over. Was stopped for about 15 minutes. Streets were flooded on the way home, down power lines (150k witout power at the peak I heard), and lots of downed trees. Area where my part-time job is was hardest hit. At work now (we've got generator power) and we're dumping more than $200k in perishable product that's lost. Heard there's 1 or 2 holes in the roof, but it could have been worse. Update with some pics I took earlier with my cell phone in the morning. Quick check of my car earlier looked like there's no hail damage. This is getting ridiculous, Im beginning to instinctively turn on my headlights when I get in the car because its always either raining or overcast, I feel like a moron when ever I do it when its sunny (like certain times today). __________________ "Drive Fast and Take Chances" | | | 06-28-2008, 07:22 AM | #3 | Senior Member Join Date: Feb 2005 Location: Richmond Hill, GA Posts: 1,231 | damn that really sucks but at least no one was hurt. at least seriously. Kinda funny thing, one of the news stations here (and some of the cops patrolling out in this area) said half the front of my store had blown away. They must not shop here because the store is being remodeled and the front of the store has been half demolished for at least two weeks. Hoperfully have power when I get home in the morning, I didn't see an power lines down in that area. The area where my store is it'll be a day or so at least as there are many power poless literally laying flat on the ground. Got word this morning (had power when I got home) that two teens were killed just across the river in Council Bluffs. They were apparently in a car in a parking lot, probably waiting out the storm, when a tree crashed down on the car. A third teen in the back was trapped for a while. Some pics I took last night and this morning can be found in a set I put up on Flickr here. Area where my store was seems to be one of the hardest hit. Area of midtown Omaha got hit hard too, and there's a lot of older trees there. I think many people are counting there blessings because it could have been much worse. It hit as most people were getting off work on a Friday afternoon, they had a summer arts festival going on downtown, and there was supposed to be a free concert in one of the parks (usually attracts 25,000+ people) and many were out there staking out spots. I just think that people around here, and in the midwest as a whole, are getting tired of the storms. Especially just finishing cleaning up from one when another hits. We will survive though.
