Tips? | | | 08-06-2011, 07:01 AM | #1645 | Junior Member Join Date: Dec 2009 Location: HOUSTON,TX Posts: 14 | well jca, i went ahead and let one of my friends at the shop change it for me, charged me $50 bucks, form what I've heard and seen, it is way too much of a hastle for me and honestly i had little to no time to do it my self, but it didn't turn out to be as bad as i expected, i spent a little bit under $200 buck in total. i was surprises in how fast he handed me the car , he was done with in an hour. Only it i could have filmed the guy to help out the whole ti community on this FAQ topic (changing starter). Ill ask him what steppes he followed to see if i can make some ti members life a bit easier. | | | 08-06-2011, 07:23 AM | #1646 | NOBODY F's with the Jesus Join Date: Oct 2006 Location: Ventura California Posts: 7,824 | It's nowhere near as difficult as people make it out ot be. I've R&R'd a few starters on these cars and I'd say if everything goes smooth and you have the correct tools and enough space to work, it shouldn't take more than 2.5-3 hours tops for your first time. Once you learn where everything is at and how to get to the two bolts, you could probably do it in 1.5hrs. Despite what others have done and what people will tell you, there's absolutely no need to remove the intake manifold. I've done it from underneath the car every time and others have too. The key is to use a really long extension to get to the bolts. 18"-2ft long. A swivel will make life much easier. Up until mid '96, 318ti's came with non threaded starter housings. This means that you had to use a nut on the engine side of the starter. Late '96-on, came with threaded starter housings which means the bolt went through the transmission bellhousing and threaded directly into the starter. It makes life 100 times easier since you won't need someone to hold a ratchet, extension and socket on the nut while you tighten it from under the car. The good news is, the starters are interchangeable. So when you get a new starter, get the newer style with threaded holes! | | | 08-06-2011, 07:36 AM | #1647 | Junior Member Join Date: Dec 2009 Location: HOUSTON,TX Posts: 14 | | | | 08-06-2011, 07:40 PM | #1648 | Senior Member Join Date: Dec 2010 Location: Wichita Falls, Texas Posts: 1,364 | Thanks to the both of you for the information. If my starter gives me some warning before going out, I think that I'll change it out myself. | | | 08-14-2011, 09:05 PM | #1649 | Senior Member Join Date: May 2011 Location: Michigan Posts: 183 | Replace CCVV and Cam Chain tensioner. While I had the windshield washer bottle out of the way I decided to clean and tape up the AC connector too. Seems to run and idle much better now. On the test drive my son was driving and I was giving him some launch instruction on a dirt road and we discovered that we have Limited slip or posi, so bonus. Tried to use my Car Soft cables and software, but it was giving me a windows error so back the drawing board on that. All in all a pretty good day. | | | 08-14-2011, 10:28 PM | #1650 | Senior Member Join Date: Sep 2007 Location: asdfasdf Posts: 10,002 | niteshaded the lights on the track car | | | | | Currently Active Users Viewing This Thread: 9 (0 members and 9 guests) | | Posting Rules | You may not post new threads You may not post replies You may not post attachments You may not edit your posts HTML code is Off | | | |
