Well as much as I would like to take all the credit for creativity I actually got the idea/info from Tony aka blubimma. He mentioned it in his build thread and jumped the gun when I saw his pictures.
He went with 128i rear rotors and Mercedes rear calipers, just don't remember from which car.
So since he said the rotors from the 1 series fit I got some too. Paid $9 a pair for oem rotors at the time from ecstuning, and at first I thought it was $9 each side so I ordered 2 and ended up with two pairs of rotors for cheap!
So I made my own brackets but no longer talk to the guy that helped me (ex's lil bro). I could get a machinist to make more but that'll require for the ti to be taken apart and it's my daily driver. If there is a good amount of interests I consider it tho. It's not a perfect fit however. I had to grind the carrier in the middle so the rotors wouldn't rub against it while pressing the brakes. It's about 1-2 grinded down on each side just for clearance.
All in all braking distance and power are even now. The m3 caliper is smaller than the rotor but still works and functions 100% fine.

Awesome info. Now, how does one identify these different calipers and carriers? Someone just sold me a set advertised as 330, but I have no idea if they are really 330 or maybe they are 328 sets.

What are the casting numbers on the calipers? I just installed a set and I can check for you.

Those are not 330 calipers or carriers. They are the calipers and carriers for the 283mm vented rotors for the E36 and E46 323i Sedan. They were standard fare for the 318ti from 4/98 on and considered an upgrade for earlier build 318ti's.

Thank you. I guess the guy that advertised and sold them to me is the same douchebag that steals all the hood and trunk badges off BMWs in the local salvage yard ...

Default Caliper and Carrier Identification

Members, from what you know and the cars that you have, would you please post the caliper and carrier casting numbers / letters and from to which car they belong? For example,

318ti with 283 vented rotors
Calipers: BMW 54/22 640 AHN and a 5
Carriers: 6220 443 [diamond] 3

I'll capture these and consolidate into a single post.

From the limited info available on this custom brake upgrade this is what I have discovered:

Stock e36 318ti Rear Rotor:

Stock e36 M3 Rear Rotor:

Stock e85 Z4 3.0L Rear Rotor:

Stock e82 128i Rear Rotor:

The above images depict the dimensions of the rear rotors of each of the bold-lettered vehicles. When talking OEM rear rotors that are vented BBK upgrades for our cars and that would allow for the 318ti E-Brake shoes to still work there are two that seem to fit the bill (That I was able to find). These are the e85 Z4 3.0L rear rotors and the e82 128i rear rotors. As you can see from the dimensions they each have similar hat heights to the stock rotor, and although not depicted they both use 160mm diameter E-Brake shoes (Same as the 318ti). Our Shoes are 5mm wider in friction material than either the e82 or e85 e-brake shoes, but that should not effect the functionality of the parking brake.

I am going to choose the e82 rotors as I have the e36 M3 rear calipers, and looking at the thickness and diameter of the 128i rotor, it most closely resembles the thickness and diameter of the M3 rotor, which means that the application will be an almost perfect pairing for the piston travel of the caliper and the bias should be nearly identical to the M3 (with matching front brake calipers/rotors/brake servo/and master cylinder of course).

I believe that the aftermarket rear BBK upgrades from IE and the bracket available from 300mm.de were designed around using the Z4 rotor as they are advertised as 294mm x 19mm vented upgrades which corresponds to the diameter and thickness of that rotor, so this I presume would be another viable rotor choice, but as it is a tad thinner than the 128i rotor (an consequently even thinner yet than the M3 rotor) I don't believe it to be the better choice to pair with M3 rear calipers. If you got the Z4 calipers to match they would be a good upgrade option as well over the stock 318ti rear brakes.

To be clear, any of these proposed upgrades are not direct bolt-ons and would require some or all of the following:

- modification of the 318ti backing plate to either remove or flatten out the lip on the perimeter of the backing plate that used to fit the stock 272mm diameter rotors as it would certainly interfere with the larger rotors.
- Possibly cutting the backing plate to make clearance space for any custom carrier adapters and/or calipers installed that are larger than the stock calipers.
- Possible Custom rear brake line to reach the new calipers.
- And of course a custom bracket/adapter to mate the new caliper's carrier to the 318ti hub's mounting points and move the caliper the correct distance away from the center of the hub to fit the larger diameter rotor.

Hope this info helps all contemplating a less costly rear brake upgrade than the Z3M sub-frame swap. I should have this project done some time in early May of this year and will be able to contribute real tangible documentation to back up this research proof of concept.

All credit for the idea of using the e36 M3 caliper paired with the e82 128i rear rotors should go to "Marv17." To the best of my knowledge he has already done this swap successfully and is the reason why I am even pursuing this project.

Cheers

What happened with this??? Pictures?? CAD drawings???

I'm extremely interested!! I've got a 97' Ti. Plans are M52 swap stripped out track car. I want as much braking as I can get cheaply so I'm planning to do the 330i 325x25 rotors in front and I'm worried about brake bias.

This sounds like a GREAT cheap option for the rear but I need the dimensions for that adapter??? I have a friend with a CNC machine who can make it for me, I just need the dimensions.

..... crickets ... crickets??????

Ok I'm assuming by the lack of response that no one followed through with this or is not willing to share ... So I guess I will have too. This is the setup I have planned for my Ti so I'm going to design and make the bracket with my friend who has the CNC machine.
The setup will be 128i rotors, M3 rear calipers, custom bracket to space calipers.

When we've completed this project are there any members in here who would be interested in buying just the bracket to do there own rear BBK? My friend is always looking for new projects and business for his CNC machine and I'm sure he could make and sell these for much cheaper than $300. That would provide a much cheaper option to IE.

Looks like someone went ahead and made the brackets a while ago:

https://srs-concept.com/product/e36-...e-adapter-kit/

Its cheap, and they also have for e36 m3 caliper/rotor except that you loose your ebrake with it. If you decide to come up with something, or an alternative option I am sure people wouln't mind.

Only other rear brake upgrade from stock is:
- 6cylinder z3 rear calipers
- 525i rear calipers
But with those "bolt-on" upgrades there is no change in rotor.

Good luck.

FREAKIN AWESOME!!!!! This is EXACTLY what I'm looking for!! ... well almost lol ... they don't use the M3 calipers on the 128i rotor kit with the functioning parking brake. That's kind of a bummer because I've already bought M3 rear calipers and very expensive pads. But I'm sure I can sell the calipers and exchange the pads ... I would much rather do that then not have a parking brake or redesign one of these adapters!!

Thanks for the link!! I'm so glad I don't have to spend time on designing and making one of these adapters.

This link and information should be added to the original information post.

Good to see that was helpful!

Your idea brought up a good point - would you mind experimenting for us? Since you have the rear m3 calipers, and will buy the adapters (I have a set I'm not using if you want to buy from me - I live close - Upland) you might as well see how the m3 calipers bolt up to the adapter plate and 1-series rotor, before going with the e46 rear calipers.

You have a set of the adapters??? If so then ya I might be interested in buying them from you ... the problem is I already ordered these from the company last night ... but I don't think they've shipped them yet. I will buy yours if they haven't shipped yet.

So are you thinking the M3 calipers might work after all??? I was actually about to leave right now and go pull some calipers from a 328i at Ontario PickaPart.

Some interesting news regarding using rear m3 calipers on the 300mm vented rotors!

So I emailed SRS about using the adapter to put a m3 caliper on, and I quote:

"Hi, the only way to use the e36 m3 caliper on the e46 caliper bracket (#506). they will slide on the e46 non-m slider for the rear"

So! Hopefully 300mm rotors + SRS adapter + e46 (#506) caliper braket + e36 m3 rear caliper = Awsomeness!

@ AFDanHef - I replied to your PM and also sent you a text. It would be awsome if you could test it out for us!
