Can the shuttle come out without removing the headline and sunroof unit?

That is exactly what I am trying to do.

Trying to remove the sunroof metal top so I can remove the shuttle without removing the headliner. I already recovered my headliner. Now I am planning on recovering my fabric shuttle.

Ok. so take the metal roof piece off. 3 17mm bolts and the one t20 along the side. Then unscrew the 5 screws on the shuttle and lift it out the top?

And... 30 minutes later, the headliner is out... hopefully I'll get the sunroof fixed next week, just in time for warmer weather here.

Looks like bazar01 added some photos since the last time I checked this thread... thanks!

Interested in this thread as I recovered a spare headliner cheap at a yard to renew in advance of pulling mine out. No time to replace the fabric myself at the moment, looking for a reasonable place near Sacramento, CA to get the fabric removed and replaced. I'll install/deinstall the headliner once done. I have both ti's to do.

When I do the 95, I'll address my sunroof operation.

Default Headliner repair

I did one of mine in an alcantara-like Microsuede a few weeks ago. Just go slow, and get a fabric steamer and heat gun. Those tools will be your best friends in this job. I'll try to do a write up at some point if it will help people.

Just a tip, 3M Super 77 adhesive doesn't work well enough for this. My new headliner is sagging again.

Hey Andrew! Ya I had heard that. Also the headliner backing needs to be very dry and clean before applying the adhesive. I have 2 spare headliners I will do at the same time in advance to save time and effort. The third is for the Cali and I have a spare to do in advance as well.

My new-to-me '97 Cali has a black fabric headliner that is sagging. Doesn't seem to be like the foam-backed fabric that sagged on my old '93 525it - that stuff was horrible and couldn't really be effectively re-stuck. This seems to be more like the old "mouse-fur" headliner cloth of early VW bug days. Will be moving the car from misty moisty Oregon down to SoCal soon, so will probably wait to attempt any headliner repairs in hopes that it will stay stuck better down south.

I just found a guy who has been doing headliner repairs for 30 years driving around on his van with a sign "Headliner repair" $69.
I called the guy and told him I already have the headliner off the car and will bring it to him.
He said, no problem, pay me $40.
Finally got the headliner on my 1998 done for $40.
Amazing guy. I will post a pic later.
