What is the advantage of going with medium case over small case? | | | 06-16-2012, 10:07 PM | #2 | Member Join Date: Apr 2011 Location: S. Medium cases are built a little beefier, handle more power good if you plan on doing an engine swap or going FI. | | | 06-16-2012, 10:24 PM | #4 | Senior Member Join Date: Sep 2011 Location: Florida Posts: 404 | Ahhh I see. So all I would need for one of those is the new differential and some E30 CV axles? | | | 06-16-2012, 10:26 PM | #5 | NOBODY F's with the Jesus Join Date: Oct 2006 Location: Ventura California Posts: 7,824 | And shim the rear ABS sensors. | | | 06-16-2012, 10:30 PM | #6 | Senior Member Join Date: Sep 2011 Location: Florida Posts: 404 | Does the '95 have ABS sensors? | | | 06-16-2012, 10:34 PM | #7 | Senior Member Join Date: Oct 2008 Location: Los Angeles, CA Posts: 1,464 | Quote: Originally Posted by Breticus Does the '95 have ABS sensors? | Yes. | | | 06-16-2012, 10:35 PM | #8 | Senior Member Join Date: Sep 2011 Location: Florida Posts: 404 | So what do you guys mean by shim? Just grind down? | | | 06-16-2012, 10:36 PM | #9 | NOBODY F's with the Jesus Join Date: Oct 2006 Location: Ventura California Posts: 7,824 | The reason they need to be shimmed is because the e30 halfshafts have larger diameter ABS tone rings. The teeth on the tone rings pass by the ABS sensors which are magnetic and generate a pulse. It works exactly the same way the speed and cam sensors work. If you don't shim the ABS sensors, the ABS tone rings will rub and destroy the sensors. All you need is a washer with a 5/8" hole to raise the sensors about 1/8th of an inch. See the "toothed" ring on the axle? That's the ABS tone ring. It's larger than the one on the 318ti axle. Therefore, if you force it into the trailing arm, it will destroy the ABS sensors if they're not shimmed. The sensors mount in a hole on the trailing arms and the magnets ride about 1/32nd of an inch above the tone rings. That's what shim means. | | | 06-16-2012, 11:21 PM | #14 | Senior Member Join Date: Sep 2011 Location: Florida Posts: 404 | AHH! So I just need a spacer of sorts? I can do that. Just a decent sized washer? | | | 06-16-2012, 11:29 PM | #15 | Senior Member Join Date: Sep 2011 Location: Florida Posts: 404 | This may sound stupid, but I don't need a left and a right cv axle do I? You just buy 2 and flip the other one around? | | | | | Currently Active Users Viewing This Thread: 1 (0 members and 1 guests) | | Posting Rules | You may not post new threads You may not post replies You may not post attachments You may not edit your posts HTML code is Off | | | |
