Default Nooby question: Where's the fan?

Hi,

I'm the new owner of a US spec, '95 M42, auto/ a/c. There is no fan attached to the water pump, justy a big electric fan attached to the engine side of the radiator. Is this the way they come from the factory? OEM parts only shows the engine driven fan, nothing for an electric only. Is there any reason to convert to an engine driven fan? It only runs when the temp gets to a certain point, it doesn't come on with the a/c, just cycles with the engine temp. Is this normal?

Thanks!

( I love this car! )

THD.
