Has this happened to anyone else? I have had a bunch of BMW's and this is a first for me. Was washing the Ti a couple of weekends ago, and was drying the front bumper. Had my hand on the Roundel on the hood. Stood up and the decal comes off on my hand. Not the whole emblem, just about half of the BMW and one quadrant (white). Getting the whole emblem off to install the replacement was a whole another thing, and once I did, the gromments in the hood doesn't hold the new badge. Lucky that I insisted on two new gromments, or it would be another drive to the dealer. But I have never seen nor heard of the paint/decal/whatever come loose from the underlying metal of the badge. Anybody got any ideas about what might cause that??? | | | 02-06-2006, 04:42 AM | #2 | Senior Member Join Date: Jun 2003 Location: Greenville, SC Posts: 9,356 | I find that the decal fades and cracks. Never had one come off completely. Must be that California sun. I always use new grommets when I replace Roundels. __________________ ...steven BMW CCA #146825 1996 BMW 328ti • 2003 MINI Cooper S • 2016 M235i www.bmwcca.org | | | 02-06-2006, 04:44 AM | #3 | Senior Member Join Date: Aug 2005 Location: Thousand Oaks, California Posts: 343 | Do you mean like the one attached cuz i think thats pretty common when it gets old... __________________ 1993 325is Hellrot Tribute to: 97 318ti Montreal Blue R.I.P 96 318ti Schwartz II | | | 02-06-2006, 04:48 AM | #4 | aka Stabby Join Date: Nov 2004 Location: Mead, CO Posts: 5,336 | you should see mine ... __________________ 1996 318ti, California package, 267k miles current mods: bilstein sports, bavauto springs, e30 m3 LCABs, solid metal ball joints, bavauto RSMs w/reinforcements, e30 3.73 LSD & halfshafts, supersprint cat-back exhaust, turner rear sway bar reinforcements, IE poly subframe & RTABs + camber/toe kits, powdercoated e36 32x front calipers, sport mirrors, H&R 28mmF/19mmR sway bars, x-brace, auto solutions SSK w/poly bushing upgrade, BMW CD43 head unit, DICE HD Radio w/iPod integration and "stealth" HD antenna, staggered style 68s, orange electronic TPMS, leather arm rest, JT Designs metal undertray acquired and awaiting install: heated seat kit, cali top switch relo, lumbar support kit, park distance control kit, heated washer nozzle kit, m-coupe rear subframe, trailing arms, differential, and halfshafts, m-coupe front/rear brakes with master cylinder, under hood light kit, mud flaps, rear sun blind, auto-dimming rear view mirror, tilt steering wheel retrofit, apexcone 5000K HIDs with 55W ballasts 2002 X5 4.4 Sport Package, 53.5k miles Current Mods: e46 m3 steering wheel | | | 02-06-2006, 01:55 PM | #5 | Moderator Join Date: Jun 2003 Location: Bouncing off the rev limiter in CT! I expect I'll need ANOTHER one within a year or so. | | | 08-20-2006, 07:44 PM | #6 | Member Join Date: May 2005 Location: Virginia Posts: 48 | That happens!! I had the same thing happen to me during a heat wave here in Virginia. On a 103 degree day I closed the trunk with my hand on the emblem and it came off. Only half of it. Peeled right off like it was made to do it. | | | 08-20-2006, 08:08 PM | #7 | Senior Member Join Date: Apr 2004 Location: Pennsylvania Posts: 218 | Hehe, A few months ago I was on the turnpike, and stopped for gas. It was a pretty windy day, and when I got back in my car I saw this BMW roundel sticker rolling in the wind past my car. I didn't think much about it until I got home and realized it was mine... lol. | | | 08-20-2006, 08:24 PM | #8 | Member Join Date: Jun 2006 Location: Ithaca, NY Posts: 77 | ahhh yeah.... when i bought my ti, my hatch roundel was completely bare. so bare in fact that it looks chromed out, cept you can barely see the the middle circle split in 4. i had someone ask me where i got a chromed out roundel... i just said it came with the car, lol. 20 bucks later, it looks as good as new. | | | 08-20-2006, 11:09 PM | #9 | Senior Member Join Date: May 2005 Location: Pismo Beach, CA Posts: 500 | SHoulda been an easy install, going from under the hood lol. I park outside everyday though, so the heat may have something to do with it I guess. | | | 08-21-2006, 05:59 AM | #11 | Senior Member Join Date: Sep 2005 Location: Virginia Posts: 247 | About half of mine disappeared one day, upon investigating, I noticed that the rest of the emblem was going to chip off at any moment. Check on ebay, you can get a new one for 20$ or so and 10 minutes to install it. __________________ Silver 98 318ti Standard trans, Sport Package: 16" Stock Wheels, Foglamps, Sunroof, Heated Leather Seats, Bilstein performance shocks, OEM Sach's clutch kit, Dunlop SP Sport A2 225/50/16 tires, Alpine CDA 7894, Dual Rockford Fosgate 12" subs, Rockford Fosgate Amp, Leather Armrest, Replaced M44 engine with only 40k on it! http://www.geocities.com/evalha/bmwsmaller.JPG | | | 08-21-2006, 07:33 AM | #12 | Senior Member Join Date: Feb 2005 Location: Tampa, FL Posts: 677 | that happened to mine a month after having the ti, i was like nooooo not my emblem, went to the dealer and got a new one. They usually only last about 5 years at the most.. Bavauto has them for a good price, and as was said make sure to get the grommets as well... For the roundels on the wheels you can easily replace those. Pull the center cap off and get it completely clean. Then use a little bit of weather seal caulk in the center of the cap and press the new roundel onto the center cap. Hold it or clamp it until the caulk dries... You could use superglue or something like that, but the next time the roundel cracks or chips you will have to replace the entire center cap as you will not be able to get the damaged roundel off. With the caulk they just pop right off with a little bit of pressure and it is easy to cleanup. | | | 08-21-2006, 04:56 PM | #15 | Senior Member Join Date: Jun 2003 Location: Halethorpe, MD Posts: 1,028 | I'm on my third one since November of '97.
