Interior lights issue

I have two problems similar, yet dissimilar to previous threads. First, the interior lights will not go on no matter what position the overhead switch is on. Secondly, when I am driving the footwell lights and the rear hatch light stay usually. However, they often flicker and occasionally go off. This suggests a short somewhere. I've examined the wiring diagram without being able to locate the possible connection between the two problems..... that is if they are connected. Any experience or insight would be helpful.
