I've done so many mileage calculations (trip odometer / gallons to refill = MPG), that I can estimate the mileage pretty closely. You just get used to the position of the fuel gauge vs. the miles driven per tank. Also, I often fill up close to 10 gallons, so the mental math is simple. | | | 01-08-2007, 11:17 AM | #47 | Senior Member Join Date: Nov 2004 Location: Bremerhaven, Germany Posts: 977 | I once looked into fooling the fuel consumption gauge into reading out oil pressure. I thought you might be able to do that by monitoring the engine rpm and road speed signals and then feeding the cluster an appropriate, synthetic injection time. I couldn't figure out a nice way to keep the gauge from going to zero when you stopped, however. | | | 01-09-2007, 01:45 PM | #48 | Senior Member Join Date: Apr 2006 Location: dorchester Posts: 700 | 400 to 450 miles per tank????? u having a laugh?? wot u running ur car on!! Even on super, which is all i use (higher octane fuel..dont know wot ur stuff in the states is or wether u have a choice?) i can only get 300 at a real push.. | | | 01-09-2007, 02:15 PM | #49 | Senior Member Join Date: Nov 2006 Location: Pittsburgh, PA Posts: 1,224 | Quote: Originally Posted by oakley 400 to 450 miles per tank????? u having a laugh?? wot u running ur car on!! In fact, typically, if you are using a fuel that your car is not tuned to run on, you will get worse results. | | | 01-09-2007, 02:19 PM | #50 | Senior Member Join Date: Aug 2005 Location: Lynchburg, VA Posts: 200 | Quote: Originally Posted by oakley 400 to 450 miles per tank????? u having a laugh?? wot u running ur car on!! Even when I drive "spiritedly" I can get 375 easy out of a tank. I think someone needs a tuneup or something. | | | 01-09-2007, 04:46 PM | #51 | Senior Member Join Date: Aug 2003 Location: cary, nc Posts: 2,259 | i am lucky to get 300 as well....my poor milegae has befuddled me for ages __________________ 1995 318ti Active Pioneer Speakers [] Aluminum Billet door locks [] ACS Pedals/Deadrest [] ACS Shift Knob / E-Brake Handle [] Clear Corners/Tails/Sides [] Sylvania Exterior Lighting [] Custom CAI [] Dinan Engine Chip [] Dinan Transmission Chip [] H&R Race Springs [] Tokico Illumina Shocks [] BMW X-Brace [] Relocated Lighter Mod [] Custom iPod Mod http://www.cardomain.com/id/robcarync | | | 01-09-2007, 07:32 PM | #52 | Senior Member Join Date: Apr 2006 Location: dorchester Posts: 700 | hummm fool the octane level is in fact directly linked to the milage..all u gotta do is spend 5 sec thinking about how an engine works and then u'll realise it does!! Or just log onto a petrol website and read about it...... As for the tune up my cars fully bm serviced from day 1..how odd!! Gonna have to look into that thats quite annoying not to mention expensive when im paying close to or over £1 a litre..... | | | 01-09-2007, 08:55 PM | #53 | Senior Member Join Date: Aug 2006 Location: Central NJ Posts: 2,440 | I hit about 400 +/- 25 per tank too. Octane is measured differently in the USA and the rest of the world. Octane numbers are lower here for the same "real octane" quantity of gas. ie. 93 octane in the US is about 98-99 octane in the UK. Anyways, Higher octane means less BTU's which means in theory less mileage. | | | 01-09-2007, 09:10 PM | #54 | Senior Member Join Date: Sep 2004 Location: Manassas, VA Posts: 4,129 | Are you using an OBC to measure this, or just filling up and calculating? When I fill up, I look and see how far I drove. As far as calculating mileage, when i fillup, I use how many gallons it took/trip odometer reading. it's not 100% accurate because I never get the tank filled to exactly the previous starting point but it is damn close. I gotta use the trip odometer for something! | | | 01-10-2007, 07:13 PM | #56 | Senior Member Join Date: Apr 2006 Location: dorchester Posts: 700 | iv never bothered to actually work mine out accurately im just going by how many miles i get when i refill tank and reset the odometer...if i use standard fuel (97 octane) i get about 100 to 150 less miles per tank than super (98-99).. | | | 01-10-2007, 10:25 PM | #57 | Senior Member Join Date: Nov 2006 Location: Land of the Vikings Posts: 2,700 | i find 97 gives me a better yield than 95 but 95 and 92 actually work out the same combustion/ burn efficience on higher octane fuels directly relates to performance outputs. its proven __________________ Vin Number decode and Retrofit Pdfs Available Free ! Sorry to say but i think 400-450 is wishfull thinking or someones reading the wrong gauge!! That many miles from a tank is getting close to my diesel mpg..i know the rds, hills, style of driving all make a difference but not THAT much!! | | | 01-11-2007, 08:47 AM | #60 | Senior Member Join Date: Aug 2004 Location: state college, pa Posts: 3,431 | oakley; what's the full (including reserve) tank capacity for the UK/EU ti? It may differ from the version we get. To get a better estimate of gas mileage, read your odometer and calculate that against the fuel you've just added, rather than what you think you've burned based on the needle position. Gets more accurate when you use the same pump. __________________ I scream, you scream, we all scream for ZOMBIES. | | | | | Currently Active Users Viewing This Thread: 1 (0 members and 1 guests) | | Posting Rules | You may not post new threads You may not post replies You may not post attachments You may not edit your posts HTML code is Off | | | |
