it's gonna look sweet when it's finished, IMO, under the hood is the only place I can tolerate chrome

That's the plan, as soon as I spray the M50 manifold black, I'll go ahead and start working on the valve cover. I still have to do a couple more coats of primer and plenty of sanding on the M50 manifold though.

Been super busy for the past 2 weeks, finally got a day to work on the project. I sprayed the m50 manifold gloss black, now I have to wait 5 days to spray the chrome. I also picked up a set of wheels locally, nothing special, I'll post pics when they're back from the powder coater. Starting the valve cover and fuel rail cover tonight, here's a teaser of the m50 manifold:

style 5's Not my favorite wheels, but I managed to find a set locally in perfect condition w/caps for 500 bucks. Figured if it saved me a trip down to LA or San Diego and not have to pay a hundred bucks to have them shipped, I might as well snag them. I'll run them for a while and probably sell them once I find something better.

I am wondering if the painted manifold will retain more heat than an unpainted manifold...

Looks great though!

I don't think it'll be much of an issue since it's generally cool air going into the engine, plus My headers are wrapped which is supposed to reduce the engine bay temp anyway.

The black didn't come out perfect, but it'll be alright once the chrome goes on

Don't think heat comes from the air coming in rather the warm head it is bolted to... The air coming in will certainly cool the manifold, but will it cool as much as an unpainted manifold?

Again, I don't think it's that big of a deal. Not enough to make a difference atleast. I mean, it's made of plastic. One could go on all day thinking about which materials "cool faster" and whatnot. In the end, I don't think BMW really cared when they designed the intake manifold out of plastic. All I know is that my intake manifold is going to look sick when it's finished in chrome

Sorry I havn't been lurking in a long while, new job has me traveling wayy wayyyy more than I expected. So this comment is way after the fact...

I work on a lot of race cars in Portland at PIR and wrapping headers as far as I can tell quite often causes any welds that are wrapped to crack. Stainless headers its fine but mild steel seems to be bad mojo... I've done it for people and then replaced enough headers that I go ceramic coating now. Does not seem to cause the cracking and gives the same heat reduction. Plus they can get almost a chrome look, but white does the best at heat reduction.

Totally based on my personal sample but I've seen this on about 10 cars...

Are the s52 headers not stainless? I know they're not polished, but when I tried to stick a magnet to them, it didn't stick.
