Question Problem after changing the timing chain tensioner...

I replaced my tensioner yesterday and I think threw the timing.

I did not decompress the tensioner before installing it. After I got it in, I started it up and heard the chain noise for a few seconds and it went away. Then it started to idle really rough and lopey... So I pulled the valve cover back off and saw that the arrows on the cam sprockets were not aligned.

How do you reset the timing? Do I need to take the chain off to do it?

I can't find instructions anywhere on how to set the timing from beginning to end (ie; what needs to be removed to get at it and how to reset timing)

Can anyone give me advice on how to do this?

Any input would be greatly appreciated!

I actually have both the Chilton's and the Haynes manuals for my car and the only thing it gives me instructions on is how to remove the timing chain. It says nothing about how to set the timing...

The timing chain shouldn't have jumped that much just from changing the tensioner.

Have you verified the cam position with #1 cylinder at TDC? They should both be pointing up with the engine in this position.
