now that i think about it ... i remember tire rack listing something about being able to use a staggered setup (wider in back). is that true? if so, what rim/tire combo is allowed in the back without mods? or does one have to mod if you do a staggered setup? TIA

For starters, a vehicle with 138hp does not require a staggered set up. It does not have the adequate power. On a 318ti, it already has factory dialed understeer. A staggered set up would be just a cosmetic upgrade. If you really desire this look (8.5 wide in the rear), you must modify the rear arches and incur the added expense of replacing tires more often (you will not be able to rotate the tires front to back or visa versa).

Like I mentioned before, my rear arches were modified and I'm running 18x8.5 all around. I dialed the Eibach/Hartge sway bars for slight oversteer. A blast on the track in he dry, but a handfull in the wet.

ok ... i missed that part in the thread. at this point (still stock), i'll look to the size you indicated when i finally get around to upgrading wheels. want to do other mods first (x-brace, sways). thanks man

as an aside, what size are your sways? i was looking at the H&R set as my upgrade.

28" front and 19" rear. Both are adjustable.

Come on now.......to each their own.
If he wants to put 19" spinners on his TI, then I say do whatever makes you happy.

HOWEVER........ I wouldn't be caught dead with spinners on my TI. Spinners are nothing more than a Ghetto fad. They will be SO old and stupid by tomorrow. I can think of plenty of other things to spend the money on.
Me, personally, I like chrome 18" M5 wheels. That's about as Ghetto as I get.

As for me being called out, it was unfair and unjustified. Im not a big mouth just pouring out useless information all over these boards. I actually called 2 tire shops in town, and they said (according to their software) that 19x8.5 will fit without any modifications. Now if they are wrong, I can eat some crow for that information, but I did do what I thought was adequate research before I opened my mouth.

And as for modifying the rear arches.... Whats the deal with that? I dont get how you would modify them. By make the fenders wider, or by bending different parts? Are you saying 19"x8.5" wont fit, or ANY 19"s wont fit? Is it the 19" or the 8.5" thats going to cause the problems? I have also called on this issue, and the mechanics said theyve never had any run-ins with that problem. but then again they said they never had anyone put 19"s on a TI.

How was the question answered? You said they wouldn't fit, but didn't say how. If you say 19x8.5 won't fit, will 18x8.5s not fit? Will 19x7.5s not fit? I'm just wondering what's the problem, the diameter or the width? So no, that wast answered.

The problem is the width. 19s diameter-wise can fit. The rear of a ti has the E30 trailing arm suspension therefore limiting the space. The rear arches can either be rolled using special tool that bolts on to the hub and with pressure on the inside of the lip rolls it towards the outside. The other option is to cut the lip with a cutting wheel and grind it clean. This requires repriming and painting. I am talking from experience working on several tis.

I hope this answers your questions.

BTW, I hope you weren't offended by what I said about people being misled by wrong info. It was a general statement for all on this forum. There have been a lot of enthusiasts misled on other forums that led to expensive consequences and as I mentioned before, we are here to help each other.

Thank you. That should actually make my decision on my soon coming wheels easier. Only one of the two wheels I liked were available in 19x7.5" that I know of. At least 19"s can fit, that started to dissapoint me

I don't know if it would look tacky, but I've seen plastic pieces that make you body look wider. What if you pop rivet those on, bondo them, paint, etc..... Then you cut you actual fender, so the plastic piece would give you another .5-1" of space for the width. I personally wouldn't do it, but its a though lol.

19x7.5 should fit, but make sure you have the right offset.

What would the correct offset be... 40 mm? And Im not quite sure on what Id be cutting. A part of the frame back there that would be hitting?
