Does replacing the "413" ECU/DME EWS chip or replace the "413" ECU/DME with the Non EWS Maroon model and clipping the Green Wire to the Immobilizer, eliminate the the need for the Transponder Chip in the key and the Ring Antenna? | | | 05-05-2013, 02:48 AM | #2 | Junior Member Join Date: Oct 2010 Location: Wisconsin Posts: 5 | Did you ever get an answer to your post via a PM? I have the exact same question? Gary. | | | 05-05-2013, 03:24 AM | #3 | Member Join Date: Apr 2012 Location: atlanta Posts: 58 | The info I got for using the 413 Red DME was misleading. The 413 is for a 6 cylinder engine. The 1995 318TI ( a 4 cylinder) uses a different DME 282 Red. As to being able to eliminate the transponder chipped key, I am sure it can be done but it may be more involved than I first was told. A guy in Nashville said he could do it in one hour but could not explain procedure because he said it requires checking some additional computer codes. I am continuing to look into the issue but I am planning another approach that may be more secure and less expensive. | | | 05-05-2013, 03:32 AM | #4 | Junior Member Join Date: Oct 2010 Location: Wisconsin Posts: 5 | Gus, I found this on the Forum http://www.318ti.org/forum/showthrea...=red+label+dme Barrie, sells a chip for our DME which is $100. Based on this post it sounded legit. A number of happy customers. I am e-mailing him right now. Sounds like what I'm looking for. Mine is used for SCCA Club racing and I just want this crap gone. Had a issue at Mid-Ohio last fall and had no idea what I was in for. This was all taped together in a ball of duct tape and shoved under the dash with "DO NOT OPEN" written on the wad of duct tape. Well I opened it and this is what I found. | | | 05-05-2013, 05:21 PM | #7 | Junior Member Join Date: Oct 2010 Location: Wisconsin Posts: 5 | Gus, Barrie from Midnight Tuning Solutions has been great! Very helpful. I'm been doing car stuff for many years but this BMW electronics stuff is a whole new world to me. He's sending me an EWS delete chip tomorrow. I'll let you know how I come out. Can't wait to have this EWS stuff gone! After a guy rolled a Datsun 2000 in Turn 3 at Road Atlanta and after my own butt puckering 4 wheel drift in the same turn, I started reconsidering the possible cost. We bought my daughter's car after it had been repossessed. The engine was blown and the ignition and steering lock was broken and was disassembled. I rebuilt the engine. We were cranking in car with a screwdriver in the ignition switch. The Ring Antenna was missing and I thought the EWS II was already disabled. I bought a new steering lock mechanism, Ring Antenna and got a used ignition switch harness. When I took the dashboard and steering column apart to install the new steering lock, switch and Ring Antenna, I found the original Ring Antenna with a broken key with transponder taped inside mounted to the sterring column. I put it back on the ignition/steering lock and it functioned fine. With the second Ring Antenna , a 4 Pole Relay and some rewiring, I should be able to eliminate transponder key and maybe a little cheaper. I can add a kill switch in the circuit to disable it could make it even more secure. Last edited by gusgriff; 05-06-2013 at 06:01 PM. I had no idea until I took the wad of duct tape apart which was shoved under the dash that the car still was being controlled by the chip in the key. Car also has a master switch (SCCA requirement) so most of the time its turned off except for the 4-5 weekends a year it is used at the track. That's why I can't wait to get this EWS delete chip installed so its one less thing that can go wrong at the track. This car has been so trouble free the last 4 seasons, I guess its time I understand some of its electronic quirks.
