If the car actually does start then your starter is PROBABLY fine. Starters usually work, or don't work, without much in the middle. That being said, it's kind of hard to diagnose a "CLUNK" without actually hearing it or knowing where it's coming from on the car.

I have had problems with starters on cars in my past. It very well COULD be a starter. However, "noise" isn't too descriptive on what the probem is. I have had a starter that had a bad plunger mechanism so basically it would spin without hitting the flywheel. You could hear it spinning but nothing was happenning. I've also had starters that the electric motor went bad so you could hear it hitting the flywheel but no spinning. It sounded like a clunk and that was it. On my Ti I haven't had any problems with my starter (knock on wood). I have also had starters that had (somehow) the teeth ground off so it was able to grab the teeth on the flywheel. That made some interesting sounds. I hope this helps.

seems like the solinoid is sticking, mine does that too sometimes. One of these days, it will stop completly.

Better get a solinoid and put it in?

Don't know who to go about it, I'm in hte same boat as you.
