Default Fan switch and speedo...

This is my first BMW and I don't have a shop manual yet but I'll get one (does Bently make one?). I just bout the car and it has two small issues. The analog heater fan switch only works on high. It it the switch or the fan? Also the speedometer works only some of the time, usually when I'm going above 45mph. Do these cars have a cable type speedo with a nylong gear at the transmission? Or are they some kind of magnetic set up? Thanks in advance.

Magnetic pulse generator style plugged into the back of the differential.

So does one simply replace the head at the generator?

Well I'd first troubleshoot it and find out if the speed sensor is in fact faulty. It can be any number of things and since the sensor itself is fairly simple in design, it's likely something else causing the speedometer to only work intermittently. Start by checking the connection at the sensor, then inspect the wires. You may find a break somewhere causing it to lose continuity. You may also check the connection at the back of the gauge cluster. Perhaps a loose ground somewhere or a faulty fuse. And then of course, there's always the possibility of a sticky needle.

You can also perform an instrument cluster test by holding in the trip reset button while turning the key to position 2(IIRC), cycle through the tests by pressing the button repeatedly. One of the tests will trigger all of the lights to come on and gauges to cycle completely.

And finally, you can find part numbers and diagrams on realoem.com. I recommend plugging in the last 7 digits of your vin and then creating a shortcut to your desktop for easier reference later down the road. Best of luck.

Does anyone know if removing the instrument cluster will set off any service lights?

Well thanks guys, first fix accomplished! It was just a dirty connector on the rear end and now the speedo is working fine. Gonna order a Bentley this weekend so I can start on the heater fan.
