I was thinking to wire in a relay into a 12V ignition on wire to turn the Angels on whenever the ignition is switched on. Anyone set this up? I can figure it out, but want to cross check with folks who have done this configuration. I have set this up with a Zionsville on my 540's electric fan relay. Thanks! | Didn't do the wiring myself, but the shop that did ran a lead back to the fuse box so that the halos are on any time the ignition is on, and is independent of the parking lights. I'll take a look at it later and see if I can tell where they ran the lead. | | | 01-16-2014, 04:44 PM | #17 | Member Join Date: Aug 2005 Location: Denver, CO Posts: 90 | I ran the positive lead to the radio fuse so it turns on as you turn the key. | | | 01-16-2014, 06:27 PM | #18 | Senior Member Join Date: Feb 2012 Location: Sacramento, CA Posts: 2,451 | Guys, thanks! Definitely looking for turning them on when the ignition/engine is on so I'm not in a battery drain situation. While a good option, I'm not as keen on having them on when I'm waiting for someone parked and just listening to the radio. I don't imagine the LEDs will have a large power draw, but I have no spec on what that is. The bigger thing for me are the HID projectors, and I suspect that will have a larger draw, but have not seen an operating difference as far as power draw on my 318ic. I appreciate the feedback thus far! I plan to break out the Bentley manual and check for a candidate in the fuse box, so if you could take a peek and report as well, I's appreciate it just to confirm a power source point easier than another relay. Your projectors should be connected directly to the low beam switch, separate from the AEs, so they should not be on unless you pull the knob. That said, connecting the AEs to the ignition is recommended. I was lazy and the radio fuse was the easiest option at the time. | | | 01-17-2014, 06:06 AM | #21 | Senior Member Join Date: Feb 2012 Location: Sacramento, CA Posts: 2,451 | Quote: Originally Posted by b0m I have LED AEs as well, and never had a drain issue with just the radio on. The kit supplied harness will go to the factory High beam connector and the low beam connector plugs directly in the HID ballast. I'm more concerned actually on the draw for the HIDs on the factory wiring. No issue on my 318ic, but I wonder if the factory wiring provides enough power. I just used a male spade connector and ran the wire to the grey wires on the headlights I don't know about yours but mine came with this whole harness with a relay that's supposed to be hooked up to the battery and plug into the back of the headlights, I don't know what it's supposed to be for but I know my angel eyes and headlights all worked fine without it | | | 01-23-2014, 05:39 AM | #23 | Senior Member Join Date: Feb 2012 Location: Sacramento, CA Posts: 2,451 | Quote: Originally Posted by tiFreak might be a little late now but there is a spot in the fuse panel (at least on my 95) that's not used but it gets power when the ignition is on. It's part of the wiring kit if installing in a Euro model I was told by the seller. Thanks for the fuse panel mention. Can you take a pic of the area you are describing please? BTW, I did install the Depos this last weekend and the while the HIDs are not as bright as my 540it, they are a significant improvement over my Depo projectors. the installed bulbs are 6000k, I may look for 4500ks as the 6000k are still a bit bluish for my liking. Looks good, but I think the 4500ks put out a more effective light. Anyway, I'm happy with them they will be cooler when the AEs get hooked up to ignition power. I'll wait to check the color of the AEs before I consider a bulb swap. Thanks Brendan for your tip again! I have in the past tapped the 12+ orange wire in the bundle for the diagnostic 20 pin port in the engine bay, but my 97 OBDII connector is in the cabin so I'm looking for a different source. Thank you for looking tho. __________________ 1998 318ti Sport - "Cali" Schwartz II/Schwartz sport interior, Cali top 1998 318ti Sport - "Max" Schwartz II/Schwartz sport interior, S52 1997 318ti Sport - "Tiny" Schwartz II/Schwartz sport interior 1995 318ti Active - "Blanca" Alpineweib III/Schwartz leather interior Other Current Bimmers: 2006 530i / 2000 2.3L Z3 / 1997 1.9L Z3 / 1999 540it 1997 318ti Sport - "Huera" - RIP 1995 318ti Active - RIP 1995 318ti Sport - "Tiny" Sold 1994 325i Sedan - "Jade" - Sold 1991 318ic - "Bert" - Sold 1985 635csi sold 1984 533i "Max" Sold 1984 318i sold BMWCCA #160411 SUPPORT 318ti.org!
