My failure scenario was the valve stuck open letting moisture enter the pump and the pump failed. Got it all fixed and now the CEL is showing a cam sensor fault. I hate OBD-II. | | | 09-18-2006, 05:10 PM | #3 | Member Join Date: Feb 2005 Location: Oak Harbor, Wa Posts: 69 | Quote: Originally Posted by Phil Marx Probably the secondary air pump, the valve that controls the pump's input to the exhaust manifold, the vacuum solenoid switch, or all three. It only helps with cold start up emissions. __________________ '99 Dinan M3 | | | 09-18-2006, 05:33 PM | #5 | Member Join Date: Feb 2005 Location: Oak Harbor, Wa Posts: 69 | what exactly should i remove and will the light always stay on then | | | 09-18-2006, 07:19 PM | #6 | Senior Member Join Date: Dec 2004 Location: SoCal Posts: 549 | you remove it... and your check engine light will be on forever... and youll never pass smog. dunno if they make a simulator. __________________ 318Ti Sport (Gone, but thanks for your years of service) | M3 E30 | 190E-16V | M Coupe E36/8 | | | 09-18-2006, 07:31 PM | #7 | Member Join Date: Feb 2005 Location: Oak Harbor, Wa Posts: 69 | Quote: Originally Posted by AutoM3otives you remove it... and your check engine light will be on forever... and youll never pass smog. dunno if they make a simulator. | I am not sure what to do, my car is for sale and I need to fix it but I am not spending thousands on BMW service | | | 09-18-2006, 09:20 PM | #8 | Member Join Date: Jul 2005 Location: Calgary, Alberta Posts: 89 | Spend Money Light. I went through that last winter. I was getting a bunch of codes on the CEL. Had the cam position sensor replaced, and the secondary air pump. It was a little pricey, but the CEL has been off since. I have renamed the light the Spend Money Light, as there is usally no noticable difference in the performance of the car, you just have to spend money to make the light go out. | | | 09-18-2006, 09:48 PM | #9 | Senior Member Join Date: Apr 2006 Location: Southern California Posts: 456 | Quote: Originally Posted by Calgary98TI I went through that last winter. Our car used to make this whirring noise when we started the engine. It lasted for about 40 seconds or so. In retrospect now I know that it was the secondary air pump (or just Air Pump) doing its job. One day the noise sounded extra loud...that was (again in retrospect) the air pump going bad. Now there's no sound at all and we have the fault code. The pump appears in this diagram (part 01)...applies to my '98 ti A new air pump might cost as little as $200 street around here from a local BMW parts dealer (indianapolis). Pelicanparts lists it for $278. If these were in fact your symptoms then your pump probably failed like ours did. All said if you pay someone to do it, you may pay for 1-2 hours of labor? I'm sure it wouldn't be thousands, but I'm NOT sure it would fix your problem because I'm a noob. | | | 09-20-2006, 03:02 PM | #13 | doesn't care about you. If it fails after that, it's your responsibility. Simple. Your government required it. Take your complaints to the EPA. OBD-II was the government's response to making repair and fault codes available to the consumer. Imagine that, it somehow turned into a revenue producer for the manufacturers. I'll suggest that if your pump is bad, so is your exhaust manifold valve. With a warm engine the valve should be shut. The noise you hear on cold startup should sound like a hairdryer. if it sounds like a hairdryer with bad bearings, then your pump is shot. | | | | | Currently Active Users Viewing This Thread: 1 (0 members and 1 guests) | | Posting Rules | You may not post new threads You may not post replies You may not post attachments You may not edit your posts HTML code is Off | | | |
