What do you think of the $125 Duralast import starter with a $62 refundable core charge? Is it worth trying it out? My daughter's 1996 with 210kmiles has a starter that has started turning really slow. I cleaned all the battery connections and engine ground but still turns really slow. It used to turn over really fast. Thanks. __________________ 1996 Ti 280k miles and still going.... 1993 964 - holding on to this one 2001 Burban, 240k miles 2018 Suburban Z71 | | | 06-15-2012, 03:20 AM | #2 | Senior Member Join Date: Feb 2007 Location: Fl Posts: 1,353 | Quote: Originally Posted by bazar01 What do you think of the $125 Duralast import starter with a $62 refundable core charge? Do I have to pay the core first then get a refund when you get my old starter? __________________ 1996 Ti 280k miles and still going.... 1993 964 - holding on to this one 2001 Burban, 240k miles 2018 Suburban Z71 | | | 06-15-2012, 04:44 PM | #6 | Senior Member Join Date: Feb 2007 Location: Fl Posts: 1,353 | Quote: Originally Posted by bazar01 How do you handle the core? In '97 they threaded the mounting holes on the starters which made it much easier to remove. The earlier models had a nut which was a PITA to get a wrench on. So if you can, try to get a newer model. | | | 06-16-2012, 07:03 PM | #8 | Senior Member Join Date: Oct 2008 Location: Los Angeles, CA Posts: 1,464 | ...and since R&R on a starter for these cars is kind of a bitch anyway, buy a quality starter and you're not replacing it again next year. And don't take the intake manifold off, go from the bottom. | | | 06-17-2012, 06:59 PM | #10 | Senior Member Join Date: Aug 2009 Location: Georgia Posts: 595 | Quote: Originally Posted by cooljess76 Take a picture of the wire orientation. The idle tkes a long time to drop like from 1500 rpm to 800 rpm, but it is still hunting a little bit. I opened the hood and can hear a vacuum hiss from under the intake. Where could this vacuum leak be from? I was thinking maybe from the injector hoses? I may have to take the manifold off. __________________ 1996 Ti 280k miles and still going.... 1993 964 - holding on to this one 2001 Burban, 240k miles 2018 Suburban Z71 | | | 06-23-2012, 01:48 PM | #11 | Senior Member Join Date: Aug 2009 Location: Georgia Posts: 595 | Quote: Originally Posted by cooljess76 Take a picture of the wire orientation. I don't think taking the manifold off will help. If I go from the bottom, I think I will need a long 3/8 drive extension and a universal joint for the E12 torx socket. Is this correct? I cannot use just a 3/8 ratchet handle, no way it will fit in the firewall space. __________________ 1996 Ti 280k miles and still going.... 1993 964 - holding on to this one 2001 Burban, 240k miles 2018 Suburban Z71 | | | 06-23-2012, 04:33 PM | #12 | Senior Member Join Date: Aug 2009 Location: Georgia Posts: 595 | Got the starter replaced in 2 hours. I have the threaded starter housing. The upper bolt was a pain. It took a combination of E12 torx socket, universal joint, and 2x 10 inch 3/8 drive extensions and ratchet and the most important tool, my MAXJAX lift. Getting my left hand from the bottom to get to the top bolt, holding the socket with the universal and 10 inch extension was a pain. Also the tunnel insulation is coming off from the glue made it a little bit more harder because it was sagging and making the space a little tighter. But i got it. It starts a lot faster with the new Bosch starter from Bimmerbum. It also idles a lot smoother with the new CCV valve. Something fell out of the bottom hole of old CCV valve, it was shot. __________________ 1996 Ti 280k miles and still going.... 1993 964 - holding on to this one 2001 Burban, 240k miles 2018 Suburban Z71 | | | 06-23-2012, 07:59 PM | #13 | NOBODY F's with the Jesus Join Date: Oct 2006 Location: Ventura California Posts: 7,824 | Quote: Originally Posted by bazar01 Got the CCV taken cared off early this morning. | Quote: Originally Posted by bazar01 Got the starter replaced in 2 hours. | Kick ass man, glad you got everything sorted. And yes, that's exactly how I've replaced them in the past. Much faster/easier than removing the intake manifold. | | | 06-24-2012, 12:12 AM | #14 | Senior Member Join Date: Aug 2009 Location: Georgia Posts: 595 | Thanks for the tips on the CCV and the starter removal and install jess. It's located right behind the intake manifold, should be a black disc shaped plastic part. With the engine running, locate the CCV and place your finger underneath it. Feel around for an air slot on the bottom of the part. Hear the hiss change pitches? If so, replace the CCV. Trust me, you don't want to take the manifold off. And removing the manifold isn't going to help find a leak anyway. It's not like you're going to have the engine running with the manifolds off. The best way to find a vacuum leak is with brake cleaner. Start the engine, spray brake cleaner on and around all of the vacuum hoses. Listen for the RPM's to rev up. Once you hear the idle fluctuate, you've found your leak. Continue spraying brake cleaner until you're able to identify the source.
