What do you think? VW GTI or R32? Mazda 3? Saab Viggen? Audi A3? BMW 1 Series? Mini Cooper S? Just US sold cars here, no euro options please. Discuss... __________________ My Former Rides 1999 318ti Alpine White, Cali Roof, Dinan goodies 1996 318ti Hellrot California Edition | | | 04-28-2006, 11:25 PM | #2 | Senior Member Join Date: Oct 2005 Location: Quad Cities, Iowa Posts: 2,110 | Because of how I see things I would say that all non-BMW made options are out, after that I would say the Mini Cooper S. The Volkswagen GTI should also be out because it was around before the ti. The other non-BMW option I would pick would be the R32. __________________ "Drive Fast and Take Chances" | | | 04-29-2006, 12:09 AM | #3 | Senior Member Join Date: Aug 2004 Location: Tyler, TX Posts: 1,022 | Quote: Originally Posted by 96cali What do you think? My nod goes towards the mini though. | | | 04-29-2006, 12:14 AM | #4 | Senior Member Join Date: Jun 2003 Location: Greenville, SC Posts: 9,356 | And none are RWD only. I drove a Mazda Protege which I liked a lot. Just had no power, but handled well. __________________ ...steven BMW CCA #146825 1996 BMW 328ti • 2003 MINI Cooper S • 2016 M235i www.bmwcca.org | | | 04-29-2006, 12:27 AM | #5 | Senior Member Join Date: Oct 2005 Location: Quad Cities, Iowa Posts: 2,110 | The Mini is FWD? __________________ "Drive Fast and Take Chances" | | | 04-29-2006, 01:03 AM | #6 | Senior Member Join Date: Aug 2005 Location: Melbourne, Fl/Athens, AL Posts: 393 | Yep, both the original and the new Minis are FWD. __________________ -Kenny | | | 04-29-2006, 01:05 AM | #7 | Senior Member Join Date: Oct 2005 Location: Quad Cities, Iowa Posts: 2,110 | I knew the old ones were but I didnt think the new ones were. Good job that is the perfect match. The mini is a station wagon like hatch but that is a coupe-hatch like ours. Wasnt that car bashed for being underpowered and for being a cheap luxury car like the ti too? __________________ "Drive Fast and Take Chances" | | | 04-29-2006, 01:39 AM | #11 | Senior Member Join Date: Aug 2004 Location: Tyler, TX Posts: 1,022 | Quote: Originally Posted by jkilla71 C230 Kompressor Benz 1.8l rwd hatcback | didnt' they discontinue the kompressor this year? | | | 04-29-2006, 01:40 AM | #12 | Senior Member Join Date: Mar 2006 Location: Ft Lauderdale, Fl moving to Eastern PA in May of 2007 Posts: 326 | It is a 6 speed, 189 hp and supercharged but yes they went a little too far with the luxury the car is heavy at 3300 lbs. I think the car just needs to lose a lot of the bells and whistles and add some coil-overs and it would be tight. | | | 04-29-2006, 01:49 AM | #13 | Senior Member Join Date: Mar 2006 Location: Ft Lauderdale, Fl moving to Eastern PA in May of 2007 Posts: 326 | I think 2005 might have been the last year for the c230 | | | 04-29-2006, 02:01 AM | #14 | Senior Member Join Date: Aug 2004 Location: state college, pa Posts: 3,431 | The C230 is a rocket, but too squishy in the corners and poor on feedback for my tastes. However, it's the normal difference between a Benz and a BMW as far as I can tell. The A3 (2.0T) has such a weird powerband, like it's all torque and no hp. Definitely didn't know where the tires were underneath me, so I didn't feel comfortable testing it's limits. Haven't given the 2.7 a test drive, but I'm not real interested in doing so. The driver compartment is rather small. All that in mind, are you looking for a new car? __________________ I scream, you scream, we all scream for ZOMBIES. | | | 04-29-2006, 03:07 AM | #15 | Senior Member Join Date: Jun 2003 Location: Saint Paul, MN Posts: 3,244 | Wow, good desription of the A3. I drove the S-line version (not a true S3) with 3.2L 255hp paddle shift auto. Never felt connected with it. I'm not used to new $38,000 cars I guess. I still enjoyed using all the power and gears of my m44. I am dreaming of a new ride yes, just not sure what/when. I went in thinking more about a sweet AllRoad in bright red they had used. My justification on the 1 series is that it will be for sale here soon enough and the Mazdas I've driven actually have the tightest drivetrain feel (shift, clutch, accel, etc) and really surprised me. There is also a AWD Mazdaspeed 6 that may come in hatch version too. Good call on the Benz too.
