Default Rear Subframe question (Technical)

Hey guys,

I will be doing the subframe bushings in my car along with a diff mount and (maybe) the rear trailing arm ones.

My question is: Has anyone ever tried to do this method of bushing removal: http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum...bushing-puller

And if you did, did you have any issues removing the center aluminum shaft after pulling the subframe without knocking the threaded rod out? (I really don't want to have to knock it out, but I also don't want that aluminum sleeve breaking on me as it did on my E30 back in the day...)

As far as the diff is concerned, I think I'll machine a sleeve that has an ID of 3.35" and a depth of 1" with a thru hole and use some basic washer to press it out from the opposite end.

I can't saw much about that setup, but I tried to use a 10ton press and mine wouldn't budge. 10 minutes with a sawzall had them out though without any trouble. Good luck.

Thanks dude! Although I'm having a hard time understanding whether you were pushing them in our getting them out, as I'm not sure what you can use a press on in getting them out.

I'm just wondering if that center aluminum sleeve gets stuck in there without knocking the center pin out.

I think the 318Ti has less issues with that? I know I've read a lot of the E30s have an issue with the sleeve being corroded and getting stuck on the mounting stud. I think this is what you are asking about?

Not sure if your on about the rear beam bushes?
Ive just changed mine, they where a nightmare i set fire to them and all sorts,

I would recommend getting some powerflex bushes to replace them they will last forever and slide straight in once the old ones out!

Hey thanks for all the hints guys! I was going to do it this weekend but my back was giving me trouble for some reason, so I just changed my intake instead. Whitegsr - Yea that's what I was talking about - that stud in the middle of the bushing, I remember it was almost pressed against the body and the stud and was impossible to get it out without the aluminum piece breaking off in there.

Minimike - cool project, best of luck sorting the rest of it out!

Samdemange - thanks for the insight, but I did notice that in that link you mention that the stud needs to come out, do you know if that is still necessary in the e36 ti?

if u dont take away the subframe crosspiece ,its yes e30 and e 36 ti have the same rear
if not its more difficult to do it
