I have just noticed that when you turn the engine off there is something that keeps running for about 10 seconds or so then stops, sort of like an electrical humming noise. Just recently this noise has changed to a sort of low pitched scream. I think there is some sort of a problem, can anyone explain? (pardon my ignorance as I am not mechanically minded) Cheers Barry | | | 09-08-2007, 02:21 AM | #2 | Senior Member Join Date: Nov 2004 Location: Minneapolis Posts: 1,587 | Mine has always done it. I think it's normal and should be just fine. It's the idle air control valve that's making the noise. I've never figured out why it runs for that little bit after you shut down though.... Anyone know? | | | 09-08-2007, 03:47 AM | #3 | Senior Member Join Date: Apr 2005 Location: N. Texas Posts: 187 | what year is your car? I dont think 96 had the control valve like the 95. Check crankcase vent valve if 96 up | | | 09-09-2007, 05:16 PM | #4 | Senior Member Join Date: Apr 2006 Location: dorchester Posts: 700 | most cars do, just always assumed its the cooling/ fans and the electrical componants shutting off as when they're ready! If u just put the key in but dont start the engine (just turn to ignition position) and then turn back and take key out it still ticks and makes the noises.... | | | 09-09-2007, 05:28 PM | #5 | Member Join Date: May 2007 Location: albuquerque,nm Posts: 37 | I have a '96 that had the same thing happening. I ended up buying a new one from the dealer at about $150 or so, and thats with the bmwcca discount! So if you can live with the whine for a few seconds after shutdown....Guess I'm to anal and had to change it! (the Ti's a yr 2000 e36 but I expect all m44 ones are the same?) | | | 09-09-2007, 07:06 PM | #8 | Senior Member Join Date: Jun 2007 Location: Ferndale, MD Posts: 462 | I noticed mine doing it the other day too. We just got done putting in HID's and heard buzzing, first I thought it was the ballasts then i located the noise coming from area of the intake manifold. It happens any time the key is put into the number 2 position (run) | | | 09-09-2007, 07:18 PM | #9 | Senior Member Join Date: Apr 2006 Location: dorchester Posts: 700 | yup thats the noise! | | | 09-09-2007, 08:24 PM | #10 | Senior Member Join Date: Apr 2006 Location: dorchester Posts: 700 | Quote: Originally Posted by gonzeno . (real oem at $55 or thereabouts) | | | 09-09-2007, 09:11 PM | #11 | Member Join Date: May 2007 Location: albuquerque,nm Posts: 37 | The idle air control vlave I believe. Two bolts and a gasket and connector. | | | 09-09-2007, 09:55 PM | #12 | Senior Member Join Date: Apr 2006 Location: dorchester Posts: 700 | Doh!! Heres hoping the ccvv does the trick then!! | | | 09-10-2007, 03:25 AM | #13 | Member Join Date: May 2007 Location: albuquerque,nm Posts: 37 | I thought it was a sure thing as the noise it was making, and also that the idle was a bit rough. Well, it cured the noise after shut down (also while running, I could hear it). The idle was still alittle rough. Found the ICV valve leaking at the top. Changed it also and now all is well and she is purring like a kitten! $55 also! So I actually had 2 seperate problems with the common denominator being the rough idle. | | | 09-10-2007, 04:36 PM | #14 | Senior Member Join Date: Apr 2006 Location: dorchester Posts: 700 | Is this thing the icv?? If not any ideas what it is??!!!
