Anyone know how to re-attach the rear view mirror. The adhesives from like Autozone don't work. Do I have to order the new metal piece from BMW? The dealer is unsure if new glass comes with the adhesive on it or if it is on a new metal piece. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance! | | | 12-31-2011, 03:54 AM | #2 | Senior Member Join Date: Sep 2007 Location: asdfasdf Posts: 10,002 | I've used those mirror adhesives to reattach a big, heavy autodimming OnStar mirror before, not sure why it won't work for you. you didn't try gluing it with the mirror still attached to the metal piece did you? | | | 12-31-2011, 04:39 AM | #3 | Senior Member Join Date: Jun 2006 Location: Boston, MA Posts: 1,152 | Go get it done at a glass company. They will clean off the old adhesive from the metal piece and reglue it onto the window. Let it cure for like 30 mins and reattach the mirror. Most place will charge only like $10 or $15. | | | 12-31-2011, 04:50 AM | #4 | NOBODY F's with the Jesus Join Date: Oct 2006 Location: Ventura California Posts: 7,824 | Quote: Originally Posted by tiFreak you didn't try gluing it with the mirror still attached to the metal piece did you? | +1, I've used it a few times. Most recently I used it to glue my aunt's mirror back onto her Jeep. It's held up for at least 6 months now. You gotta take the metal clip off of the mirror and just glue that on. I held in place with my hand for about a minute and then used tape to hold it. After it cured for about 2 or three hours in the sun, clipped the mirror on and it's been fine ever since. | | | 12-31-2011, 10:48 PM | #5 | Junior Member Join Date: Feb 2011 Location: Ohio Posts: 18 | Hi guys! The metal piece has a round plastic disc on it. I'm not sure if that's the old adhesive or what. I did try to just hang the metal piece without the mirror attached. I do have some knowledge to this. lmao! As for an auto glass repair shop, SafeLite doesn't have a clue which seemed peculiar. lol! I guess I'll wait til Thurday and see what the dealer ordered for the new metal piece. They 50% believe that it has new adhesive already on it. I'll keep you fellas updated to know the exact truth to it. I figured worse comes to worse, I'll just take the new metal piece without the plastic and adhere straight to the window and all will be settled! : ) | | | 04-28-2013, 05:11 PM | #6 | Member Join Date: Jan 2010 Location: usa Posts: 80 | My mirror fell off last night on my way home from work. I cleaned up both surfaces with Alcohol wipe pads. I attached the mounting disc with JB Weld. After about a day or two I will attempt to attach the mirror by twisting it on the disc. Hopefully the force on the mirror twisting it back on will not rip the disc off the window. I have used that mirror fast set glue in the past but it is not reliable long term. I ended up re-gluing other mirrors on my other vehicles in the past. JB Weld is the best for everything imaginable. UPDATE: Just installed the mirror. JB Weld is the best. Just a little dab will do ya. It's not like a 318ti is going to change at all. That's the beauty of perpetuity. You're suggesting the user adding the JB weld info should have created a whole new thread and write-up "hey guys, to install the rear view mirror, use JB Weld!" ? I don't see how that would be near as beneficial as him adding to this thread, since a future searcher will then see all the extra context of things that didn't work, then (theoretically) one that did. | | | 05-12-2013, 03:44 PM | #9 | Member Join Date: Apr 2013 Location: Pittsburgh, Pa Posts: 37 | After trying 2 other window adhesives, I am willing to try JB Weld. Which version did you use 6Speed TI? | | | | Currently Active Users Viewing This Thread: 1 (0 members and 1 guests) | | Posting Rules | You may not post new threads You may not post replies You may not post attachments You may not edit your posts HTML code is Off | | | |
