Just curious will a Ti auto transmission bolt up to an S14? I know it is an expensive engine but I have a friend that bought an old M3 and he wrecks every car he owns. __________________ 318ti, sport, hellrot, 05/95 Munich, Germany | | | 01-20-2007, 02:06 AM | #2 | Senior Member Join Date: Jan 2007 Location: Ireland Posts: 382 | why would you possibly want auto transmission with a s14.... | | | 01-20-2007, 02:15 AM | #3 | Senior Member Join Date: Mar 2006 Location: Ft Lauderdale, Fl moving to Eastern PA in May of 2007 Posts: 326 | I am a commuter and I am getting too old to keep my foot on a clutch for hours a day. Besides I like my auto and with the chip it winds out nicely. __________________ 318ti, sport, hellrot, 05/95 Munich, Germany | | | 01-20-2007, 03:03 AM | #4 | Senior Member Join Date: Feb 2005 Location: la jolla, ca Posts: 222 | A S14 is not suited for an automatic...just be glad you didn't post this at S14.net. It doesn't even come alive till nearly 6k rpms. That would sort of be a disgrace to such a powerplant. __________________ Present: `99 M coupe Past: `91 330is; `95 318ti Active; `93 325is; `97 318ti Sport; `89 332is | | | 01-20-2007, 05:16 AM | #5 | Senior Member Join Date: Oct 2005 Location: Quad Cities, Iowa Posts: 2,110 | S14+auto= rice. If you did this you would deserve to die a horrible, painful, preferably firey death. __________________ "Drive Fast and Take Chances" | | | 01-20-2007, 05:33 AM | #6 | doesn't care about you. FYI...S14 is a race motor and needs to be treated like one, regular rebuilds, tunes, etc.... Maybe it's time to step up to a 7 series auto, or a Cadillac? __________________ '99 Dinan M3 | | | 01-20-2007, 05:41 AM | #7 | Senior Member Join Date: Oct 2005 Location: Quad Cities, Iowa Posts: 2,110 | or a buick with deer whistles and a fake vinyl top? __________________ "Drive Fast and Take Chances" | | | 01-20-2007, 08:53 AM | #8 | Senior Member Join Date: Dec 2004 Location: SoCal Posts: 549 | Quote: Originally Posted by windnsea00 A S14 is not suited for an automatic...just be glad you didn't post this at S14.net. | S14.net member here... blasphemous. You'd be better off with a DASC. Cheaper and easier to maintain than ol' S14. Trust. Or if you want a psuedo-S14 NA motor, go S42. __________________ 318Ti Sport (Gone, but thanks for your years of service) | M3 E30 | 190E-16V | M Coupe E36/8 | | | 01-20-2007, 11:59 AM | #9 | Senior Member Join Date: Mar 2006 Location: Ft Lauderdale, Fl moving to Eastern PA in May of 2007 Posts: 326 | Thanks for the input You all make me laugh when I see how much everybody hates auto. I was the same way but when you live in a highly populated area it gets old fast. Funny someone mentioned Buick and deer, I owned Reatta a while ago with a 3.8l and a 5 speed and it met it’s end on RT-402 in PA, when a family deer took off the front end. I have bagged 5 deer using automobiles and only 1 hunting. __________________ 318ti, sport, hellrot, 05/95 Munich, Germany | | | 01-20-2007, 10:33 PM | #10 | Senior Member Join Date: Jan 2007 Location: Ireland Posts: 382 | haha maybe you should change your name to deerkilla71 | | | 01-21-2007, 09:47 PM | #11 | Senior Member Join Date: Jun 2006 Location: SOUTH Jersey Posts: 1,085 | I live outside of Atlantic City and regularly travel to Philly and NYC for work. I have sat literally for ours in bumper to bumper traffic that only moved fast enough to be annoying. Did I mention I have done this in a 32 foot box truck with a two speed differential and a manual trans? Sorry, but a manual can work just as well as an auto in traffic. | | | 01-22-2007, 02:26 AM | #12 | Senior Member Join Date: Jun 2003 Location: Decatur IL USA Posts: 105 | Old M3 = finicky, peaky, high maintenance race motor in a body that DOES NOT WANT to be your traffic mule. ti = the modern BMW with the most in common with that great old car (including the E-36 M3). Doesn't mind traffic duty, fun on the weekends... I suggest that your friend a ti with an automatic transmission, rather than an automatic transmission from a ti. | | | 01-22-2007, 05:47 PM | #13 | Senior Member Join Date: Jun 2003 Location: Saint Paul, MN Posts: 3,244 | Good one! jkilla- good on ya for taking this with a laugh. Fed says it has to be same year or newer engine to do a swap. Hate to see folks build orphan cars....
