Default Versions

Ok, I'm a newbie. But I've searched a bunch, and have not found a good description of the different versions of the 318ti and any year variances.
Particularly, I want to know which came with a limited slip differential, as those are the versions I'll consider buying!

But it would be cool to know exactly what the differences where betweeen base, active sport, club sport and an others.

Note I'm in the USA, if that matters...
Thanks,
Carl
(PS: please point me to the thread if I've just missed this somewhere)

Clubsport definitely had LSD, any of the other model '95s could have an LSD because it was an option. Early '96s might also have an LSD, I'm not sure.

'95s had the M42 1.8L which is OBDI and easier to mod if you want a little more power. '96 - '99 were M44 1.9L OBDII.

So... I just have to jack up a wheel and spin it to see if any particular car besides the club sport has a lsd... no other easy way to tell, absent the window sticker?

What year is it and do you have ASC?

If you get the VIN number you can post it up in Mallard's thread and he'll tell you what options came on the car, including LSD. You can also look at the differential cover, notice the 6 bolts holding it onto the diff, one of the bolts should have a tag instead of a washer. That tag tells you the ratio of the diff (ex. 3.45 for open diff) if it is a LSD it will read S3.45, the S signifying LSD.

spidertri, great info thanks! I'm hoping this tag is viewable by looking under the car without a lift. Diff cover, I'm assuming you are talking about the side of the diff visable from the rear of the car, say, from under the rear bumper?

Yeah, you should be able to see it from the rear of the car.
