For the past couple weeks I have been noticing a rather odd thumping/ringing sound coming from the right rear of my TI. Today I go out from work and notice my right rear about 2 inches lower than ever b4. Luckely my bud had his tools so we got to work and tighten up the shock mounts and it seemed ok. About 2 miles from home the left rear started doing the same thing. I think its time for new shocks/ struts. She has about 180,000 miles on her and never had the rear end touched as far as I know. I have been lurking around here and the bimmerforums site for a while now trying to decifer what shock/strut package to go for. I like the blistens but everyone tells me they will lower the car. I dont need to lower it any because of the way the streets are where I live . Anyone with any input is greatly appreciated. | | | 04-08-2008, 05:29 AM | #2 | Senior Member Join Date: Jan 2008 Location: Milwaukee Posts: 189 | The Bilstein sport kit that is offered by bavauto is nice. Yes it does lower the car. However It doesn't drop it down too low. The price is good and performance is great. Im not sure what sort of terrain your driving on. If you keep the car on pavement you should be fine. | | | 04-08-2008, 05:50 AM | #3 | Senior Member Join Date: Mar 2008 Location: Texas Posts: 128 | The roads around here are failey smooth but the instersections are like launch ramps. My front bumper has a molded in lip and is just barely scraping the ground when I come over the intercetions as the suspension is right now. I have 4 or 5 of these before I get to work/college. Of course the other option is just drive slower __________________ --Kenny-- Myspace Speed costs money, I work with what I got | | | 04-08-2008, 06:39 AM | #4 | aka Stabby Join Date: Nov 2004 Location: Mead, CO Posts: 5,336 | bilstein makes some that aren't sports, think they're HDs? __________________ 1996 318ti, California package, 267k miles current mods: bilstein sports, bavauto springs, e30 m3 LCABs, solid metal ball joints, bavauto RSMs w/reinforcements, e30 3.73 LSD & halfshafts, supersprint cat-back exhaust, turner rear sway bar reinforcements, IE poly subframe & RTABs + camber/toe kits, powdercoated e36 32x front calipers, sport mirrors, H&R 28mmF/19mmR sway bars, x-brace, auto solutions SSK w/poly bushing upgrade, BMW CD43 head unit, DICE HD Radio w/iPod integration and "stealth" HD antenna, staggered style 68s, orange electronic TPMS, leather arm rest, JT Designs metal undertray acquired and awaiting install: heated seat kit, cali top switch relo, lumbar support kit, park distance control kit, heated washer nozzle kit, m-coupe rear subframe, trailing arms, differential, and halfshafts, m-coupe front/rear brakes with master cylinder, under hood light kit, mud flaps, rear sun blind, auto-dimming rear view mirror, tilt steering wheel retrofit, apexcone 5000K HIDs with 55W ballasts 2002 X5 4.4 Sport Package, 53.5k miles Current Mods: e46 m3 steering wheel | | | 04-08-2008, 02:02 PM | #5 | Senior Member Join Date: Jul 2007 Location: SW Florida Posts: 4,275 | they make Heavy Duty's as well as Touring. i just installed a set of touring rears on a MHTi members car...it felt great! best of all...it didn't lower the car a bit. they will set you back about $90.00 each. __________________ Sean 1995 Active | | | 04-08-2008, 02:25 PM | #6 | Senior Member Join Date: Mar 2008 Location: Texas Posts: 128 | I found them on pelican for $85 each. Same as your BMW factory spec. Check the bushing and mounts. You can buy some Mehle bushing. Maybe change out the bolts if old and rusted. | | | 04-08-2008, 03:07 PM | #10 | Senior Member Join Date: Jan 2008 Location: Milwaukee Posts: 189 | Quote: Originally Posted by teetime4one just inspect all of the bushings and your brake pads maybe. | +1 on the bushings. may also want to check inner and outter tie rods, control arms and ball joints. | | | 04-09-2008, 06:51 AM | #11 | Senior Member Join Date: Mar 2008 Location: Texas Posts: 128 | Quote: Originally Posted by elchicano318ti See i told you these guys will help. Most of my time was spend on the other forums scouting out as much stuff as I could.I'm glad this form exists otherwise i could be lost I think i just may cave in and get the bilstein sports.I am deffinatly in the market for some new pads as mine love to squeal every now and then. Now that I look at more cars with the sports on there that 1" drop really insn't all that bad and looks pretty good. __________________ --Kenny-- Myspace Speed costs money, I work with what I got | | | 04-09-2008, 07:00 PM | #12 | Senior Member Join Date: Jan 2008 Location: Milwaukee Posts: 189 | yay, bilstein sports | | | 04-09-2008, 07:13 PM | #13 | aka Stabby Join Date: Nov 2004 Location: Mead, CO Posts: 5,336 | highly recommend x-brace if you lower. helps protect your oil pan while adding stiffness to the chassis. __________________ 1996 318ti, California package, 267k miles current mods: bilstein sports, bavauto springs, e30 m3 LCABs, solid metal ball joints, bavauto RSMs w/reinforcements, e30 3.73 LSD & halfshafts, supersprint cat-back exhaust, turner rear sway bar reinforcements, IE poly subframe & RTABs + camber/toe kits, powdercoated e36 32x front calipers, sport mirrors, H&R 28mmF/19mmR sway bars, x-brace, auto solutions SSK w/poly bushing upgrade, BMW CD43 head unit, DICE HD Radio w/iPod integration and "stealth" HD antenna, staggered style 68s, orange electronic TPMS, leather arm rest, JT Designs metal undertray acquired and awaiting install: heated seat kit, cali top switch relo, lumbar support kit, park distance control kit, heated washer nozzle kit, m-coupe rear subframe, trailing arms, differential, and halfshafts, m-coupe front/rear brakes with master cylinder, under hood light kit, mud flaps, rear sun blind, auto-dimming rear view mirror, tilt steering wheel retrofit, apexcone 5000K HIDs with 55W ballasts 2002 X5 4.4 Sport Package, 53.5k miles Current Mods: e46 m3 steering wheel | | | 04-10-2008, 03:57 AM | #14 | Senior Member Join Date: Mar 2008 Location: Texas Posts: 128 | I was just taking a look around ebay and found these.
