If the fuseable link is broken (it sounds like it is), the car will only run while there is power in the battery. I had the same thing happen to an old z24 cavalier like 10 years ago. Once the battery is dead, the car stops running. If you keep a battery charger on the battery while it's running, I bet the lights will stay off (of course, it's impossible to drive like this, but it's a good test).

The fuseable link will probably require removing the intake manifold, as it connects DIRECTLY to the alternator.

OK, you convinced me to walk down to the car to grab the Bentley manual. I'll post the procedure in a little bit.
