I had the same problem when braking at 40 mph or above. One day I was reinstalling the front left tire and while tightening the bolts after lowering the car, noticed that the wheel moved backwards when I applied torque. Went to the right tire and applied torque to the bolts but it didn't move, so I got someone to apply torque to the left tire bolts while I looked under the car and saw a broken control arm bushing. I had the same bushings replaced a few months before, so I decided to upgrade to solid M3 bushings and problem solved.
