Your idea brought up a good point - would you mind experimenting for us? Since you have the rear m3 calipers, and will buy the adapters (I have a set I'm not using if you want to buy from me - I live close - Upland) you might as well see how the m3 calipers bolt up to the adapter plate and 1-series rotor, before going with the e46 rear calipers.
