The colder it gets the more the gas in the shocks compress so therefore it causes less resistance and will not hold open the hatch. When it is warmer the gas expands and causes more pressure against the shocks which will hold open the hatch. And that hatch is heavy, I have had my shocks off before and you think that it can't be that heavy but trust me it does require your attention.
