Nav units are way more useful for their POIs than not getting lost. They're nice if they can recalculate if you go off-route (to go around traffic, etc). I can imagine those flip-out screens would block the HVAC?

I'm contemplating getting a Garmin 10x (tiny BT GPS, smaller than my toll tag transponder) to match with my smartphone, but right now I can't justify the cost since the rare times I get lost I can find directions using my phone.

Depending on how and where you're traveling, I highly suggest a CB radio. Good for avoiding traffic (you'll know several miles in advance, and can ask for directions around it), not getting tagged by speed traps (you'll know what mile marker the "bear" is hiding) and just for craps and giggles.
