It does work. I have done it several times. It is pretty cool. I did it on my 325is, and it spat out codes for the o2 sensor and something else ( can't remember) so I changed it and...PRESTO check...

The fault code leads to a parking neutral switch. These transmissions do not have this sort of switch.
