No, they look the same but there some critical differences which makes them incompatible. The deal breaker is the wheel bearing is not the same because the ti hub would have to press into the e30...

Mine chatters a little and rattles the gearbox when it is engaged from a dead stop. I'm sure mine is worn...

M42 is 1.8L and M44 is 1.9L so minor mechanical difference but largely the same motors.
Sorry I can't offer any specific advice but if converting the 4 cyl motors is anything like converting the 6...
