FRONT SPEAKERS 4" to 6.5"!!!

How to fit 6 pounds of speaker in a 5 pound bag

After some thought, a Dremel and some time to grow a pair.. I decided to change out the stock 4" speakers with JL Audio 6.5" speakers.

1) Remove the speaker panel and the stock 5.25" speaker

2) The original 5.25" hole is big enough to only fit the magnet of the 6.5"

3) You can cut a piece of cardboard out as a template to size the hole. the 6.5" speakers already came with a template (thank you JL Audio). I cut the hole out with a dremel ( very carefully). NOTE: that the 6.5" speaker is WAY!!! to BIG!!! for the stock panal, so you have to insert it into the foot rest area. Also the speaker will protrude out of the top of the panal aswell. Becarefull to leave enough room for the hood release lever! The resone why I could not place the speaker behind the panel is because the stock 5.25" hole is not deep enough AND I didn't feel like cutting the back metal out.

5) This is the finished product... WOW it actually worked!!
and it sounds so sweet...

NOTE: The speaker it attached to the panel I had to cut the attaching screws because the were hitting the metal when I went to instal it.

Tha hardest part about this task, was alighning up the speaker with the panal so that the magnet fits into the 5.25" hole.

I have alot more pictures but was limited to only 5. Have fun and hope this helps.

what i want to see nect is the rear speackers swap the 4inch for some 5.25 speaclers and the 6inch speackers whats the spec on them how many rms size of the magnet

Nitro Nollie 11-28-2005 10:55 PM

the 4 to 5x7 swap is coming soon.... I did it already but did not take pictures, so I have to get motavated to tear it all apart again for pictures. When this happends (next week), I will post it in the REAR SPEAKERS section.

The link for the JL Audio XR 6.5" speakers is below: These are actually 1 component of the JL Audio 3-Component XR Speaker System.

The 4" and the 1" tweeter are next for the install

I will attempt to install the 4" component speaker into the 2 inch space for the stock tweeter, without cuting the door panal, to keep the stock look.

If you would like to send me the pictures then i'll put them on my server and post the pictures for you.
PM me if your interested.

WOW!!!!!!! Huge Problem....

There is no way to place a 4" speaker in the 2" tweeter location:mad:
The power window motor is in the way, I can't get enough depth for the speaker magnet:mad:

One option I saw was to build a box and place it inside the magazine holder in the door... but I dont think this will look too good... For now, scraping the 4" Idea. Now I am stuck with a 3 component system with only the 6.5" and the tweeters to be installed.

I may shift shift a 4" speaker off center and see if it works. Now I jusy have to find a 4" speaker on ebay!

the dept on the stock mid speackers is 1.2inch i installed the HK it was a tight fit

Here is the other side (Passenger side)

Inserting a 6.5" speaker in the original 5.25" location...

1) Follow the same two steps has stated in the post above. ( you know center the magnet in the 5.25" hole, draw circle using template and cut out using a dremel).
Attachment 915

2) Attach the speaker directly to speaker panel ( note that the screws are too long and will hit the metal of the car when you install it.
Attachment 917

3) Cut the screws short so they dont hit the cars metal. I cut after I installed the speaker, just make sure the sparks dont hit the speaker.
Attachment 918

4) Now you need to cut that top panel to clear the large speaker.
Attachment 916

5) And finally your done:
Attachment 919

Things to watch out for , Take extra time to make sure that you have centerd the speaker in the 5.25" hole before you start tracing and cutting. I was off by an 1/8" and it was really hard to fit the panel back on. Have Fun!!

I bought some crutchfield 6.5's and they were a pretty clean bolt in job.
Had to remove the sound dampening padding cup thing from behind the speaker then they fit right in. even have the same screw/bolt pattern and everything.

Only mods required were cutting the rim of the speaker a bit to fit the hatch release lever on the drivers side and for the cutouts that house the plastic trim cover piece. Have photos I'll upload once I figure outa good hosting site.
