my $25 one piece underpanel

So I wasn't going to spend $100+ for a pre cut sheet of plastic and some nuts and bolts for a 15 year old car that's going to see some track time, so I ordered myself a sheet of ABS and made my own for ~$25. The sheet of ABS was $22, and the hardware was about $5 from advance auto.

No real DIY, the pictures should explain themselves. Thanks for looking

step one, traced the shape of the mouth on the backside of the cover

laid down the lamb chops to shape the backside of the panel

making the cut

final step is drilling and mounting with bolts, nuts and washers, or zip ties work too.

The design is still early in its stages, I know it's ugly as heck, but it's better than no panel. I plan on polishing up the tracing soon and give it another go since I have another M bumper to mess with while this one is on the car.

I'm very confident in the quality of the material and the mounting, it's not going anywhere. Some of the edges are still kinda rough, but I'll sand them down some before putting the bumper back on.

Once again thanks for looking. If anyone wants anymore details feel free to PM me

I'll send you the cardboard mock up like I promised. You can edit from there so it's perfectly symetrical

Nice! Where did you source the plastic from?

Mr.Squeelerz 07-20-2011 06:34 PM

Very nice! This could be a movement. I think you should send me a copy of the template too

awesome job, my underpanel is currently intact *sorta* but if I ever bust it I'll probably go a similar route

Great job!

Here's the under side of my '99 ti with the M Techic bumper and splash guard.

BMW_Hatchback 08-31-2011 07:02 PM

nice! how'd you make that

screamin 08-31-2011 07:09 PM

I didn't make it. It's the oem splash guard for the M Technic bumper. There's a piece that fits inside it that fits against the radiator bottom as well.

bavauto.com sells them bmw part # 51 71 2 250 643
