Rear Brake Upgrade

Parts list:
BMW E36 M3 front rotors
BMW E36 M3 front pads
BMW E8X Rear Rotors
Mercedes CL600 Brembo package calipers
Mercedes CL600 Brembo package pads and hardware
BMW E36 M3 Master cylinder
SS Brake lines
Custom hard lines
DOT3 brake fluid

Some of you know my 357ti build, others dont, but it consists of a 5.7L aluminum v8, 6 speed transmission, 4.10 limited slip, 245f/285r, carbon fiber roof, diffusers, and a bunch of other crap. Recently, i started looking into rear brake options and nothing quite tickled my fancy, so i went off in nowhereville and created my own.

As it sits, it has the E36 m3 front brake upgrade installed, front the non-vented front brake setup when i bought the car, and the stock non-vented rear setup. Purchased some brakes from a Mercedes CL600 a few years back and it just sat in the box every since...dual piston rear, quad piston front. Dusted them off and got to work.

The rear calipers are all aluminum, dual pistoned, and have the mounting tabs built into the caliper and are also lighter than the ti rear caliper by itself. The mounting tab bolt spacing is obviously incorrect for the ti as well as its offset for the rotor, so a custom bracket had to be created as well a proper rotor and offset. I just so happened to do a set of brakes on a 128i and had a front rotor in my possession, which had a high hat area, just like the ti rear. I test fitted and the results are below.

Obviously, i had some extra parts in the garage, so i tested them on an extra trailing arm i had sitting in the back. Installing the brakes would require the removal of the dust shield and unfortunately, i thought i was going to loose the parking shoes, ill cover that later.

I created a small template from wood and then went from there.

Cut the template out and took some pics, and a couple glamour shots.

Time for some CAD, took about 15 mins or so to come up with a detailed drawing, then i sent it to my local machine shop to make my brackets. Theyre .5" thick and require welding obviously.

To combat loosing the rear parking brakes, i looking up the specs of the 128i rear rotor, literal identical to the fronts, except, they had a provision for shoes. Got on ECStuning.com and looked up a pair, 9.00$ for the pair of zinc coated BMW stamped rotors on clearance. Needless to say, i hit the buy button a few times. :) The rotors came next day, its about 2hours away, and needless to say, perfect match.

Tackwelded the new bracket in place, installed the stock shoes, then the 128i rear rotor, then caliper, then topped it off with the pads and hardware.

The sweep area is absolutely spot on, inside and out, leaving no rust lips and maximizing the pads ability to stop the rotor efficiently. As you can see in the pictures above, everything lines up, the bracket is aligned using the old mounting tabs, and is placed so the center of gravity has changed towards the center of the vehicle. The New brake line will be a hardline, form-fitted to the trailing arm assembled and reattached to the stock flex line. Since i have upgraded both front and rear brakes, pushing more fluid, the master cylinder has been replaced with a larger m3 cylinder and new lines ran for the abs box. The rear upgrade setup is 2mm larger in piston diameter than the M3/Mroadster, so the bias has been set nearly to stock m3, for now. The entire setup has only cost me 140$.

What material did you use it for brackets?
Where exactly I need to weld?
And if its possible, could you please share the CAD?
The pads are cls600 stock?
And the brake lines what size I need?

Regards

Just steel.
It's placed against the original mount points, around it's entire perimeter.
Cad later.
Stock cl pads are my trial pads, going to upgrade this summer.
Brake lines to caliper are OE Mercedes. Rand new hard lines since mine were rusted and needed new mount points

Great!
If you have a pic after welding would be great. Also if you have the cad.

Thanks

Awesome write up. Did you sort out the parking brake details?

Bluebimma 06-05-2013 01:02 AM

Yes, I used a staging kit and second valve for an electric parking brake. It's the same as the new bmws and audi's. Press the brake pedal while running or pump them up, press electric parking brake button which actuates the solenoid for line lock, thus locking the brakes in "on" mode. To release, press momentary switch and unlock brakes. Allows the removal of the parking brake handbrake, cables, rear backing plates, show assemblies, and all associated hardware.
