Doing a custom Turbo with M50 Mani

I started a turbo build up on my 91 E30 using a M50 Turbo manifold with runners 5 and 6 chopped off and blocked. Fits the M42 like a champ and bolts right up but I am running into trouble fitting the turbo. If I bottom mount it I need to replace the engine mount on the passenger side with something custom and if i top mount it I need to use 4" of spacers so the flanges can mate up. Just wondering if anyone here has used a M50 turbo manifold on an M42 and how they went about fitting a turbo. Turbo is a 63 on the hot side and a 60 on the cold. USing a 6psi wastegate, fmu, 2.5" turbo back and a nice meaty intercooler up front. Hopefully I will be able to get the help I need here to finish this up over the next few weeks.

I haven't heard of any one doing a custom turbo one this site, but I would like to see some pics and see the occasional update.

This is for a m50, might be able to modify it for a m44.

I am going to completely remove the engine mount and try to fit everything up with an external wastegate. If it all goes fine I will just put it on a trailer and take it to a local shop and have them fab up a engine mount that will go around the turbo. It really seems like this is the only obstacle in the way. I am surprised that this isnt a common thing and a part isnt already readily available. Hell, i will have around $600 into the setup less the mount. Definitely going with a 6psi wastegate though since I will more than likely have boost creep due to the placement of the wastegate.

very nice an affordable turbo??

keep us updated. and post some pictures if you can.

maybe if it all works you could write up a how to.

teetime4one 01-15-2008 04:19 PM

as you can see in the link that Clay posted....it looks like custom headers are the key.

thesk8nmidget 01-15-2008 04:31 PM

those headers look like a headache to build!

Well, I am having my buddy take it to a shop tomorrow and have a custom motor mount fabbed up that will connect to the area of the block where the AC compressor and bracket used to be. THis way I can get the motor mount done without losing any driveability in NA form. I decided to place the turbo under the manifold and simply use a T3 wastegate adapter that will fit between the manifold and turbo since the internal wastegate will hit the block. Luckily I habe a friend who just upped the size of his turbo on his M20 and he gave me his 2.5" turboback with a magnaflow. It will bolt right up to the turbo and there is no wastegate :) (talk about lucky) SO I am about 90% done with parts. Heres a rundown so far so i can copy and paste it later when its rocking.

T3 Turbo 60 trim
M50 manifold chopped at runners 5 and 6
BOV
2" Intercooler Piping
Intercooler
6Psi 38mm wastegate
T3 to T3 wastegate adapter 2.5" high
2.5" Turbo Back Exhaust
Adjustbale Cartech FMU "Begi"
12mmx1.5 to -4an adapter (Running from Oil pressure sender port)
-4an to -4an oil line restricted to 1/16" (Should keep oil pressure around 15Psi or less)
Volvo Charge Pipe with 1/2" Port (for BOV)
Walbro 255

PCV will vent to a catch can and the IAC will loop back to the underside of the TB. I also have an Emanage Blue that I was going to put on my MKIII supra but sold it so I am going to start off by simply using the Air flow part of it like a AFC (might swap the AFM over to hot wire MAF from an m50 E36 since I have both a 3" and 3.5" euro in the garage) but also have the ignition harness and FI harness and will eventually replace the injectors and FMU and have it controlled much more accurately with the laptop (little 8" sony vaio in thje glove box), just want to get the first part complete and drive it for a few weeks. Also need to pick up another wideband with narrowband output so i can eliminate the stock one.

sounds good! hope to see some pictures once that mount is done.

Can you take a couple pics of that manifold? I gotta see this! I wanna see how you modded it to fit the turbo and such.

Beau B 02-07-2008 05:08 AM

Does the M44 and M42 have the same spacing between the cylinders? Also to just clarify you are saying that the M50 has the same spacing as the M50?

bmw318is1994 02-07-2008 05:17 AM

ok i didn't fully read...i'll admit. That is a good question about the M42/44 having the same exhaust manifold measurements or not. I would def. like to see a picture of that manifold where you chopped off 5 and 6. If you wouldn't mind posting so we can all see!
