M40 Cam Timing - Special Tools.
 
Firstly, I'm a newbie and so this is my first post...

Now, the problem... I'm replacing the head gasket on a friends M40, cam belt etc and note that the manual refers to a locking pin for the crank, and a cam locking 'saddle' that sits over the square flats on the end of the camshaft. My question is, are there any drawing of these tools as they look simple enough to make (I have access to a lathe etc..) and, can the cam be timed accurately enough without the aid of the cam locking tool. There doesn't appear to be any obvious witness marks or pointers for the cam, however there is a definite arrow for the crank pulley. Any help would be appreciated..

If you don't have the tool, the cams need dialed in with a dial-indicator. (Should be anyway IMHO...)

There has been a thread on making the tool either here or m42club.com

Reckon that'll do it?

I already have the dims for the crank locking pin, 20mins on the lathe will suss that out..

Perhaps someone could translate the German?

OK, from what i can work out, it looks like the translation goes something like this:
Camshaft Locking BMW M40
All Dimensions are in mm
The next bit makes reference to the RED dimensions, suggests that these are the 'important' ones.
The stuff in the middle tells us that the material needs to be 8 - 10mm thick.

This helps me out immensely, reckon I could knock that up in an hour or so...hope it helps others as well.
