MANG CODES
 

Good morning all, I need help. Can some one help me figure out what parts I will need to fix on my 318ti 96. I went to go get a full maintenance in my car and I got all of these codes that I need to fix. The codes are: OX3E (DX3E), OX1B27 (DX1B27), OX34, OX33, OX32, OX70, PX340, the ones with the parenthesis I wasn't sure if the mechanic wrote a O or D. Please help me, I'm trying to fix my car before it gets any worse. I was in shocked when I got all of these codes, and I do know it's going to cost me a lot of money. Hopefully some one of you could help me out here. Thank you...

Those don't even look like real codes. I think your mechanic is trying to rip you off. Sometimes they make up a bunch of BS so it looks like they did a bunch of work and to justify overcharging you. Shady mechanics will also try to scare you by saying that it won't pass smog, it's not safe to drive or some other crap, in hopes that you'll panic and pay them to work on your car. It's probably something simple like a torn intake boot or bad oxygen sensor. 99% of the codes are emissions related. The computer does store codes until they're cleared with a scantool, but I've never seen a car with that many codes. I'm assuming that your check engine light is on, but how does the car feel when it's running? Any abnormalities, high or irradic idle? What year is the car? Or, you can always take it to another mechanic and see if he gets the same codes. If not, then you'll know somethings up.

Edit; okay, I read one of your other threads where you mentioned it was making a noise. I noticed your car is a '96 which means it's OBDII and likely has some sort of emissions related problem. As I said before, 99% of the time, the check engine light is triggered by something emissions related. The only thing emissions related that i could associate with a noise would be the secondary air pump leaking, however, this would only happen for the first 30 seconds or so after you start the car. The noise may also be a completely unrelated problem. I'd take it to another mechanic and have them scan the codes. Most reputable shops will scan them for free.

I'm not sure he's trying to rip you off, but they don't look like OBD codes. If your car is a 96 model, you have what is called an OBD2 engine management system. The good news is that OBD2 codes can be read with any OBD2 scanner. Often you can go to an auto parts store to borrow a code reader and read your codes free of charge. You might want to give this a try, and come back here with the results. A couple of quick phone calls to auto parts stores (Advance Auto, Autozone, Pep Boys, etc) should find a shop you can do this at.

And they certainly don't come up on the BMW code list.

The noise that my car had, its already fixed and I do have the engine light on. Could that be the reason why all of those codes came out?

Thanks for the advice I will definitely go to another mechanic and get a second opinion or go to Auto Zone or some sort to check the codes listed.

I don’t even know the mechanic listed that way in the diagnostic sheet.

Codes are usually stored in the cars computer until they're cleared with a scantool regardless if the problem has been fixed or not. For example, when I first got my car I ran over a block of ice and broke off the post-cat oxygen sensor. The check engine light came on, I replaced the sensor and the light went out. However when I hooked up the scantool, the code was still present until I cleared it. In your case, the check engine light is on, so there's still a problem. Like I said though, it's more than likely something simple to fix and emissions related. Also as mentioned before, those don't even look like real codes, I think your mech might have made them up in an attemp to screw you over. How far are you from Ventura, I'd be happy to scan the codes and help you out.

maybe the codes are specific to the scanner your mech used and you have to look them up in the book that came with the scanner.. maybe

although if you replace x with 0 they mostly look like codes.. and add a P in front...
