New Battery, but engine still won't start

A relative borrowed my '96 318ti this past Sunday and on Monday, the car wouldn't start. It cranked, but didn't turn over. I tried starting it again this morning, and after a number of clicking noises, it seems the battery died.

I hadn't replaced the battery since I bought the car in '01, so I got a new battery and installed it. The old battery was dead according to the guys at Autozone.

After installation, no more clicking, but the car just cranks without turning over. There have been some issues with an intermittent starter sensor in the past, but accompanied by a spinning sound, which usually resolves itself after a few attempts at ingnition.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Did you disconnect or connect the battery with the key in the ignition? If so you may have EWS issues, which are costly. Let us know.

If it is not the EWS then I would try to see if the fuel pump is working. The relay is in the fuze box area of the engine compartment. Check your manual for the exact location. I would jumper the fuel pump relay and listen for the fuel pump to run. Key position doesn't matter because when you jumper the fuel pump relay the pump will get power immediately. If you turn the fuel pump relay over you will see some numbers on the bottom. You want to jumper from 30 to 87. You need a couple of male prongs and a piece of 14 ga wire minimum. Once you jumper the relay you should hear the pump immediately run. If not then you have a fuel pump problem. This is the most likely cause of a car that will crank but not start. Fuel pump relay bad. The other most common causes are a relay for the DME so try the pump first...

You can check for spark quickly. Pull one plug wire and insert extra plug into it. Lay it on the engine so that the body of the plug is grounded. Have a helper crank the motor. Watch for the plug to fire. If no fire, then the DME is not working for some reason. Many potential causes, though. If you have spark, check for fuel.
