Squeak heard in interior of hatchback

I have a 1999 318ti with the M-Sport package. It's really in great condition and
I am the 3rd owner and a long time BMW owner. I have a squeak at the rear around the hatchback and I am having trouble pin pointing where it is. I think it has to do with the door, because I drove it on my driveway with the hatchback up and I didn't hear it. It is not a rattle and it isn't triggered by bumps, it's more when I am turning and just driving. Anyone have any ideas? I wonder if it is the plastic panel on the door itself. Thank you.

Set a mouse trap. If squeak seems too loud for that....get a pellet gun!

Two things I can think of:

First off, check the bolts that hold the latch in place. You'll have to pull back the plastic cover some to see, but shouldn't have to remove it fully. I've had both fail, which allowed the latch to loosten. My problem was more the latch acting up and not catching than squeaking, but it could be possible

Another is the rear shock mounts, though I would think they would make noise on bumps. I couldn't figure out where one of my squeaks was coming from until my RSM failed, and the shock was sticking through the carpet:rolleyes: Didn't really have a pattern to it making noise though, was more random than I'd have expected.

The rear seatbacks can also squeak. IIRC, we "fixed" this on Lazoh's car by folding up a piece of paper and wedging it around the metal post that the seat back latches to.

Thank you guys. It is definitely in the door. I tried it with the seats down, with the back cover off and it still did it. I checked all the tools around the spare and that is not it. I laid in the back while someone was driving and pushed around and I still couldn't locate it. It seems like its somewhere in the plastic cover over the bottom part of the door, or where the door meets the car. I will check the latch.. Thanks

Had a similar problem which was solved by adjusting the two rubber stoppers on the bottom of the hatch where it meets the car. Turn them anti clockwise so they protrude down further.

Thank you eshtebah ! I adjusted the rubber stoppers on the door like you said and it totally fixed the squeak. So much better now, and now I know what to
do if they loosen and the sound comes back.

Thank you for posting.

Here are a couple pictures of the rubber stopper that I turned counter clockwise which made them stick out further because they are threaded. This totally took care of the noise. Attachment 12302

I had a prelude with a squeaky door hinge once. Drove me nuts. It was just due to wear over time and nothing I did would help. Eventually I just broke down and replaced them. Solved the problem.
