I have no idea what you mean, what is a canyon car, what is 4.1...what is too short...

4.1 rear gears?

If so there are plenty of RPM calculators on the net.
Punch in tire diameter, rear end gear ratio, and the
top gear in the tranny ratio, and youll find your answer...

I'd want 70MPH to be under 4000, any higher and the
freeway noise will suck.

I think a 4.1 would be about 3875 RPMs in 5th gear @ 70 mph. Or so says the gearing calculator I found.....

thanks a lot! the reason why i asked is because my friend was giving me his e30 4.1 rear lsd and the half shafts and i didn't know if i should put them on or not.

The swap is easy enough to try that its worth a shot...

I'd assume about 3 hours on a Saturday to swap parts
assuming youv'e never done the rear end on a BMW>
Your going from like a 3.73 to 4.11
which is just enough to REALLY feel in first and second... :)

A 4.11 should be noticibily faster. Fine for even longer trips if you don't mind 5K at 80 on the freeway. :)

I picked up 5-7mph top speed at the front straight at Thunderhill and dropped 2 seconds off my lap times by going to a 4.44.

4.1 diff gearing will definately produce a noticable increase in acceleration. Our stock ratio is 3.45, so it's quite a jump.

im sooo excited because my car is open diff right now too.

Definately let us know what you think about it. I've been toying with the idea of a 3.90 or 4.10 for a while now. Gas milage be damned, full speed ahead.

You could tune the ratio back just a little with slightly taller rubber. I'd play with a gear ratio cal and see....
