Custom suspension
 

Working on designing a custom suspension for my 95 sport ti. Has anyone done something similar?

I'm doing a double wishbone style suspension.

In general the .org is kind of a slow forum but even if people do not necessarily respond you will get people looking at the posts.

Haven't done to much besides designing yet. But its coming along. I do more custom audio then car with.

Sometime down the road I intend to do either a dual A-Arm or a multi-link rear setup. Struts up front can work really well when properly setup and there are lots of parts available for the E36 to correct the OEM geometry for a much lower car.

Probably the easiest (and best) way to do it would be to pick up the suspension out of a donor car that has the entire suspension mounted on a subframe and then simply build a new subframe that used the donor car geometry but managed to fit it on the 318ti. Suspension geometry design is VERY complex, starting with a donor car that handles well (using front struts preferably) and has aftermarket support would probably put you miles ahead on a setup that works well without multiple revisions.

I already have a track proven design ive built before, i just wanted to see what others may have done, i have a custom double wishbone design i made

:) So google around about the E30 M3 Super touring cars. Same suspension as ours and for about 3 years NOTHING came close. Sometimes they know what they are doing.. :D

the upside is the E30 style suspension on the TI has some fairly generic mounting locations so a rear rube assembly to hold whatever experimental thing you want to do is fairly easy.

The type os suspension I am going to use if very similar to what an F1 has. But i took the basis of what they have and adapted it to drift. To me its perfect,

When you say similar to F1, I'm curious what you mean. I assume you just mean dual A-arms because there is nothing ideal at all about F1 suspension on something that resembles a road car?

Anyway, sounds like a great project. Like I said, I’d love to do the same.

Pdxmotorhead, keep in mind that the competition at that time was also mostly using semi-trailing arm suspension as well. E30 guys are so hung up on what BMW did 20 years ago that they fail to see the progression made since then. Yes, it can work alright, but it’s so heavily compromised that they aren’t even in the same league as a properly setup dual A-Arm car
