HOW-TO: Retrofit Tilt Steering Wheel NOTE! This was not an original option on the 318ti and therefore this is not a ti-specific procedure. http://www.apexcone.com/JimPowellHom.../tiltwheel.htm additional information provided by clex2: Quote:

I just bought a tilt steering column on ebay!..... Where did the link/ write up go?... |
Simple google search returned the following link which is still working: http://www.pelicanparts.com/BMW/tech...t/E36-Tilt.htm |
Any updates to this tutorial? I was wandering around a pick-n-pull salvage yard and saw a '94 E36 sedan with a till wheel in it that wasn't crashed in the front. I was thinking this might be useful in my race car build because the race seat is significantly lower than original. |
Do we need to use a E36 4-door for this mod? |
I've done this mod on my car when I swapped an S52 in. I would not recommend it for utility, unless: a) you're searching for exclusivity, b) you have everything apart already (i.e., engine out, driver seat out, etc.), and only ~1" of up/down travel really is what you need. I race in 24 Hours of Lemons (in a 1969 Opel GT!), and if you're truly going the race car-only direction, then you're probably better off welding the column mount to a lower point (like a knee-knocker crossbar). |
This Ti is going to be a Lemons car with a M52. I would like to do the tilt wheel for the other drives befit too. Did you participate in the last Gingerman race? Quote:

Here's an alternative to swapping the column. I removed the 2 factory bolts as it directs in the tutorial. I figured out what height I wanted the wheel at and installed longer bolts with spacers between the column and the dash frame. I have mine as low as the knee bolster trim will allow. Scott |
That's great for one driver but when you have a endless possibility of body types it would be nice to have a tilt wheel to make driving a race car for 1-1/2 to 2 hours as comfortable as possible. I'm probably going to put some spacers on also because the tilt doesn't move that much. Is it best to start with a 4-door tilt column? I'm ready to go! http://i759.photobucket.com/albums/x...05FF8D1526.jpg[/URL] |
