318ti Turbo by MK Motorsport

Here is my topic for this rare compact, built by MK long long ago...

Oem:
M42b18.
Slip differential
No air conditioning
Sport seats
Bostongrün paint

MK spec:
230bhp
300nm
Td04 turbo upgrade, boost at 0,65bars

Car is tuned with mk suspension ( bilstein B8), full exhaust, ecu, m3 front brakes with 4 pot caliper, MK rims 2 parts...

Upgrade made:
-kw v2 coilover
-m3 3.2 front strut bearing
-mk motorsport final exhaust
-removal of the visco fan and changed for electric one
-bigger radiator
-recaro speed mounted on home made rails
-m tech 2 steering wheel
-center armrest
-willans harness
-pagid brake pad
-4 pistons front caliper rebuild + Iron brackets
-full braided lines
-m3 side protective mouldings
-white/red tail light
-m tech rear spoiler (in paint)
-light flywheel single mass from TTV uk
-sachs performance clutch mecanism
-sachs performance clutch

since some months i mainly worked on improving rear axle.
-m3 3.0l rear differential stripped down for inside slip differential
-323ti in 3.73 ratio bought for swapping and fully refurbishment (4 bearing, all gasket, friction plates, fine grinding of half shell....etc...), and swapping from 168mm to 188mm
-rear trailing arm fully rebuilt with powerflex rubber with excentric, new bearings, refurbished caliper and brake lines
-rear axle carrier fully refurbished too ( electrolytic curing +sanding + rust free primer+ paint +rubber )
-modified output flange based on M3 flanged that are much beefier than 168mm one ( splinned area is longer, outer ring is huge...welded + milling will do perfect flanges)

in parallel I've started improving turbocharging components :
-new silicone hoses
-td04hl 16t new turbo with tunable wastegate and cbv from ARD
-pressure management rebuilt ( was only a tube with hole to fool wastegate spring rate...)
-crankcase ventilation
-full rebuild of Intercooler with Mishimoto universal one + piping

and many other little thing:
-magnecore sparkplug wiring
-boost gauge
-heat insulation of engine harness and battery
-silicone hoses overall improvements
-leakage on upper timing chain cover repaired
-airbag lights fixed
-etc....

will add pictures soon ;-)

some story now...

MK Motorsport was founded by Michael Krankenberg, and as a race driver he achieved to get 3rd place in Nürburgring endurance race before many official teams.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MK-Motorsport

MK Motorsport is one of the few approved tuner by BMW.
They are not building cars like Alpina or Hartge, they sell "performance kit" and mainly turbo add-on.

https://i58.servimg.com/u/f58/13/50/82/64/dscf7010.jpg

for Their commercial need they've build only one of each motor to get the larger press feedback.
For E36 compact they've build 316ti, 318ti on different kind of motor (M42 / M43 /M44).

My car was their former press car for M42 in mid 90's

I've managed to get some press release, where one can see licence plate :

https://i58.servimg.com/u/f58/18/80/64/89/couv_s10.jpg
https://i58.servimg.com/u/f58/18/80/64/89/sport_10.jpg
bottom right my car :
https://i58.servimg.com/u/f58/18/80/64/89/pub_mk10.jpg
https://i58.servimg.com/u/f58/18/80/64/89/autojo10.jpg
https://i58.servimg.com/u/f58/18/80/64/89/bmworl10.jpg

the French administration incoming approval for owner licence, MK plate is the same :

this means that I'm the happy owner of this former press-trial car !

Very neat, about the on'y thing is would consider changing is getting rid of the AFM and going to a proper blow through MAF for better response.

Nakamiki 09-19-2017 07:53 AM

you're right, AFM is very restrictive pathway... but I should start to remap ECU with larger injector as MK hadn't changed the 19lbs stock one.

I also had no monitoring, like AFR / AGT / oil pressure + Temp ... I've just bought a Zadatech kit to add a "E28 like" on board display near the roof switch.

after monitoring is done, larger injector + fine tuning, then MAF delete should be schedule.

I've had many job to do only to "rebuild" it, as the car has made less than 6000 km in the last 10 years before I get it. Now it's back to its original level of performance.

E30-M3 09-19-2017 10:24 AM

Very neat car none the less, any idea on how many kits MK built ? If you are a youtube fan ACS built one as well as Hartge but ACS shipped one to the US for testing by Motorweek. It's like our first 323Ti here that we never got. BMW was I imagine afraid it would hurt sales of the normal 3.

Nakamiki 09-19-2017 12:03 PM

I got them on phone call, they have no figures, but they think about 200 to 300 turbo kit where sold.
Kit is made with iron cast manifold + piping + lotec intercooler + Volvo TD04HL15G + ecu + down pipe + cold spark plug.

I know other "tuned compact", Hartge used to do strocker with M42 upper than 2.0L. Alpina managed to put a V12 for extreme case.

323ti is becoming rare here in europe, it's a restrained 2.5L, but with some modification it start to be very quick.
In germany there's many 328ti as it's really a quick engine swap, and M52B28 is a fantastic motor.

With 1250kg (without removing things like I do for trackdays), I've managed to get some serious figures. especially on dry cold weather.

best 1/4 mile was 13.98 sec.
some swapped ti are faster than mine, but with the short M42 I have not the sluggish E36 front axle as inline6 have. It's well balanced for track .

(sorry for my approximative english sometimes...)

anassa 09-21-2017 06:55 AM

Thanks for sharing!! That is very cool to get your hands on something as unique as the 318ti you have! I enjoyed reading through the articles and reading your story. It looks like your compact is very fun to drive!

I also noticed a big difference for the front end weight when I swapped in the M52b28 in my compact (iron block too! not aluminum). With the m44 the ti was more "tossible", very easy to just turn the wheel and the car follows.

(Don't worry, your English is still probably better then most people in the U.S.! )

Nakamiki 09-21-2017 02:11 PM

thx Anassa, most important is that we can share and understand between us.

E36 compact is very sensitive to the weight load in front of front axle... I guess there should be like a "balance" of weight which are over axle.

E36 are known to be "sluggish" with front axle, and need X-brace to get a more reactive steering. I have this X-brace to fit to improve my chassis again.

after that I'll study some roll center correction :

http://www.meganracing.com/uploadima...011_174138.jpg

E30-M3 09-22-2017 12:59 AM

Roll correction is needed when you lower car and change wheel size. I added roll correction spacers to my e30 m3. The helped not only with bump steer but turn is as well.

Yes the 6 cylinder ads some extra girth forward of the axle which dampens the tossable feel but it also allows the back end to be used to power it through the corners where the normal m42/4 run of the mill was a slug. I purchased a ZHP rack for mine to increase the ratio and have yet to install it but from what others have said it's great.

Nakamiki 09-22-2017 09:23 AM

that's where Turboed 4 pots is clever :
-torque of 320nm to 380nm
-same HP output than 6inline after heavy mods ( 220+)
-"lightened" front axle
-lighter motor

but it's as costly or maybe even more thant buying I6 + perf parts ...
turbo + piping + intercooler + all side modification + injectors + ECU remap +etc...
all these are expensive and mechanical skills are higher as is not a direct bolt on like some engine swap

With down mount turbo, it worth it. it's almost "street legal" as the owner licence is for a 4 pot, and you stick to it.
If some police control leads to opening the hood you're not busted as some obvious swap ( V8 in 316i lol )... here is more restrictive than in the UK or US
